Lady Pios topple Loranger in Class 3A regional
CROWLEY – It’s all about getting hot at the right time once the playoffs begin.
In the case of Notre Dame, the Lady Pios aren’t just hot, they are on fire.
the latest example: The Lady Pios banged out 15 hits for the second straight game and cruised to a 15-0 run rule victory over Loranger Thursday in a Class 3A regional playoff game at Hensgens Park.
The victory sends the Lady Pios to the Fast Pitch 56 Tournament at Sulphur’s Frasch Park where they will square off with No. 1 seed John Curtis Friday at noon.
“It was nice to see the way the girls came out and took care of what they needed to,” said ND coach Ashley Ray, whose team has scored 15 runs in each of their playoff victories. “The girls realized how important this game was and they came out swinging the bat.”
Everyone in the Lady Pios’ lineup had at least one hit on the day, which was the key, said Ray.
“Every single one of our players contributed and you can’t ask for more than that,” said Ray. “It’s all about situational hitting; the bunts, the sac flies, hitting a ground ball to the right side with a runner on third. They’re all not trying to get up there and be the hero and that’s the big thing. They all have a role to play and everyone is doing their part.”
While the Lady Pios’ offense was scoring runs in bunches, Marcella Gossen held the Lady Wolves at bay at the plate.
The freshman hurler limited the visitors to just one hit on the day and walked none. She recorded three strikeouts in the four-inning contest.
“Marcella threw really well,” said Ray. “She got up there and she was just so calm and collective. They did get one hit off of her, but it didn’t really bother her. She’s not getting up there trying to strike everyone out; she trusts her defense and she’s just really been doing a great job.”
The Lady Pios plated three runs in the opening frame on a pair of RBI triples from Elise LeBeouf and Taylor Satchell and an RBI single by Brittney Nolan.
The lead ballooned to 10 in the second inning as the Lady Pios pushed across seven more runs. Three of those runs were courtesy of two Loranger errors while another scored on a passed ball. Doucet and LeBeouf each drove home runs on a double and a single, respectively, while the final run crossed the plate on a ground out to second base by Mary Kate Bourgeois.
Satchell had another RBI triple and Nolan logged a sacrifice fly in the third inning and Mima Doucet and Grace Douct accounted for the final two runs in the fourth inning on a run scoring single and an RBI double.
Satchell paced the offense with a 3-for-3 performance that included two triples and two RBI. LeBeouf and Grace Doucet followed with two hits, including a triple, and two RBI each, Mima Doucet had two hits, including a double, and two RBI , Bourgeois had two singles and one RBI and Nolan singled and drove home four runs. Paityn Desselle had a single and an RBI while Gossen and Madison Jacques each had a single.
