LeJeune, LeBeouf help lead Lady Pios past Teurlings
LAFAYETTE – The Notre Dame Lady Pios may have not been at their best Monday evening, but in the end, it really didn’t matter.
Despite two key starters spending the bulk of the first half on the bench, the Lady Pios were able to break open a tight game in the third quarter and cruise to a 51-38 victory over Teurlings at the Rebel Dome.
“Madelyn (LeJeune) spent a lot of time in the first half on the bench with foul trouble and we subbed for Elise (LeBeouf), who is ailing a little bit and isn’t 100 percent; so we played a lot of the first half with two starters on the bench,” said ND coach Nolan Theriot, whose team led just 29-24 at the break. “But we made some adjustments at halftime and we were able to press them (Lady Rebels) and get some steals early. The first three minutes of the third quarter really changed the complexion of the game.”
Notre Dame (10-4) forced numerous turnovers in the third quarter that led to a 17-8 run and enabled the Lady Pios to take a comfortable 46-32 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Pios slowed the pace by spreading the court and they were outscored 6-5 in the final eight minutes.
“The score wasn’t great in the fourth quarter, but we weren’t attacking the basket,” said Theriot. “We were just trying to work on some things and we were trying to move the ball around and be patient.”
LeJeune paced the Lady Pios with 17 points, including eight in the third quarter outburst. LeBeouf followed with 12 points, Alyssa Williams added seven, Hanna Esthay scored six, Annie Matthews had three and Hunter LeBlanc, Melise Gossen and Marcella Gossen each had two.
