Midland cruises past ESA
MIDLAND – The ESA Falcons went toe-to-toe with the Midland Rebels in the first four minutes Monday and even led twice in the District 7-B contest.
The Falcons’ hopes of an upset bid, however, diminished quickly after that.
The Rebels (19-5, 4-0) went on an 11-0 run from there to end the quarter and they never looked back in a 64-28 thrashing of the visitors.
Randy Primeaux’s driving layup tied the game at 7-7 with 2:43 left in the opening quarter and it was all Midland after that. Devin Gautreaux scored five points down the stretch and Primeaux added another layup to give the Rebels a 16-7 advantage.
Gautreaux then stroked three 3-pointers in the second quarter and Dagan Patin hit two shots in the paint as the Rebels pulled out to a 34-16 advantage at the break.
Things didn’t get much better for the Falcons in the second half.
The Rebels went on an 11-2 run in the first six minutes of the third quarter before the reserves hit the court for the final two minutes of the frame. Taatum Rubin scored all five of his points during the run.
Leading 49-21, the starters took the court for the start of the fourth quarter and went on an 8-1 run before the reserves entered, this time with just under five minutes remaining. Griffin Hains scored four straight points for the Rebels down the stretch and Anthony Massey added three.
Gautreaux paced the Rebels with a game-high 21 points. Traven Guidry hit double figures with 10 points, Primeaux added eight and Patin had six. Dylan Boudreaux followed with five points and Ty Breaux finished with two.
Dominic Berthelot led the Falcons with eight points and Cole McKay had five.
