Notre Dame dominates 6-3A All-District selections

CROWLEY – A change in districts didn’t seem to phase the Notre Dame Pioneers’ football team in 2013.
After leaving District 4-3A to join the likes of Abbeville, Erath, Kaplan, North Vermilion and West St. Mary in District 6-3A, the end result was pretty much the same as in years past - pure dominance.
The Pios ran roughshod through the new league and outscored their opponents 195-22 .
The end result was yet another district championship and a whopping 14 spots on the 4-3A All-District first team. In addition, the Pios swept the squads’ top honors in Coach of the Year Lewis Cook, Offensive MVP Brad Stoma and Defensive MVP Hunter Stelly.
Cook guided his Pios to an unbeaten regular season where his squad claimed non-district victories over LaGrange, Breaux Bridge, Teurlings, St. Louis and Catholic of New Iberia before cruising past each district foe.
The Pios earned the No. 3 seed in the Division III playoffs and advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Parkview.
Stoma, a junior quarterback, completed 60 percent of his passes (71-117) for 1,069 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also picked up 380 yards and 11 more touchdowns on 64 carries.
Stelly, a senior linebacker, racked up 90 tackles during the regular season. He had 55 solo tackles, six for a loss, and 35 assists to go along with one sack, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups.
Aside from Stoma, the Pios landed six other spots on the first team offense.
Senior tailback John Michael Besse earned a spot at running back after rushing for 831 yards and 12 touchdowns on 112 carries. He also had 281 yards and five touchdowns receiving.
Also earning spots were senior wideout Kevin Frank and senior tight end Conner Benoit. Frank led the Pios with 17 receptions for 255 yards and two touchdowns while Benoit had seven catches for 71 yards.
Christian Hundley, Patrick Hundley and Wyatt Breaux each received first-team honors on the offensive line.
Stelly was joined on the defensive unit by fellow linebacker Kade Smith, who had 16 solo tackles and 11 assists. He also had three tackles for a loss, two sacks, one fumble recovery and two interceptions.
Seniors Gavin Bourgeois, Rankin Bihm and Sam Veillon each nailed down spots as defensive backs. Bourgeois  racked up 27 tackles, broke up six passes and had five interceptions while Bihm had 20 tackles and one interception. Veillon had 34 tackles and one pass breakup.
The final two spots went to junior defensive linemen Nate Link and Connor Kirsch. Link logged 50 tackles and had 11 sacks while Kirsch had 60 tackles and eight sacks.
The Pios earned six spots on the offensive second team in running back Lance Bertrand, wide receiver Royce Zaunbrecher, offensive linemen Connor Arceneaux, Reese Besse and Jacob Bruno and punter Dustin Reiners.
Linebackers Matt Hanks and Caleb Lambousy were joined on the second team defensive unit by defensive back Christian Landry, defensive lineman Curt Petitjean and kick returner Joe Faulk.
Jeff Michael Daigle and Shea Zaunbrecher were tabbed to the honorable mention list.
