Pios pull off sweep in VC tourney
ERATH – The Notre Dame Pios made it a clean sweep at the Vermilion Catholic Tournament on Saturday by knocking off Oak Grove and Beau Chene in their final two games of the weekend.
The Pios (3-0) rallied for a run in the top of the seventh inning Saturday morning to slip past Oak Grove, 3-2, and later they cruised past Beau Chene, 12-3, in their final game.
Against Oak Grove, Sam Hoffpauir sparked the Pios’ rally with a bunt single to start the top of the seventh inning. He then advanced to second base on an error and moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Vicknair. Brad Stoma plated the eventual winning run on a sacrifice fly to right field.
David Frank preserved the victory in the bottom of the frame by sandwiching a strikeout in between a groundout and a fly out.
Frank was credited with the victory in relief. He worked the final three innings, allowing no runs on just two hits while also striking out two.
Dillan Gilbert got a no decision after pitching the first four innings. He surrendered two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two.
Joe Faulk and Stoma each had one hit and one RBI in the victory. Taylor Faulk followed with a triple and Hoffpauir had one hit.
In the final game, the Pios plated seven runs in the first two innings before exploding for five runs in the fourth.
Nick Hanks led the offensive charge with two doubles and three RBI while Faulk added a double and a single to go along with two RBI. Pete Brown also had two hits, including a double and one RBI.
In addition, Faulk and Hoffpauir each added a double and an RBI; Jacques Thibodeaux singled and drove in a run and Stoma and Vicknair each logged RBIs.
Weather permitting, the Pios will play host to Class 4A Sam Houston this afternoon at 5:30 for a non-district contest.
Gents fall to Airline
LAFAYETTE – The Crowley Gents committed five errors that led to five unearned runs Saturday in a 9-4 loss to Class 5A Airline in the Lafayette High Tournament.
The Gents (1-1) trailed just 3-2 after the third inning but gave up six unanswered runs in the final four innings.
Haden Erbe suffered the loss after allowing five runs, only three earned, on three hits and three walks. He struck out four in 3 1/3 innings.
Jon-Riley Mouton worked the final 3 2/3 innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks. He struck out two.
Mouton also paced the Gents at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance that included a double and an RBI. Pate Broussard and Erbe also had two hits each.
Zack Breaux followed with a double and an RBI and Andre Larry had a single and an RBI. Alex Ashby added a double and Austin Duhon picked up an RBI.
The Gents return to action today when they play host to Carencro at 4 p.m.
Bulldogs drop pair
EUNICE – The Iota Bulldogs dropped their first two games of the season over the weekend at the Eunice High Tournament.
Iota (0-2) fell to Ascension Episcopal,11-1, in five innings Saturday and then dropped an 8-1 decision to Episcopal Baton Rouge later in the day.
The Bulldogs logged just four hits in each contest.
Against AES, Hunter Andrus, Deven Mouton, Kevin Pousson and Beau Miller each had one hit.
In the loss to Episcopal, Pousson, Tristan Miller, Michael Miers and Austin Montgomery each had one hit. Miers had a double while Montgomery collected the Bulldogs’ only RBI of the game in the seventh inning.
The Bulldogs will travel to Lake Charles today to take on Washington Marion at 4 p.m.
