Prep Roundup: Bulldogs snatch victory over Oakdale
VILLE PLATTE – The Iota Bulldogs had to work overtime – literally – to advance in the Sacred Hart of Ville Platte Tournament Monday.
The reason for the extra work was the Bulldogs’ inability to capitalize on late opportunities, including a missed layup at the buzzer, resulting in the game going into overtime with a very athletic Oakdale team.
Fortunately, those squandered opportunities didn’t come back to bite the Bulldogs.
Kade Hebert sank four free throws in the extra frame for the only points of the period as Iota held on for a 65-61 victory.
“We had three opportunities to win the game in regulation and we didn’t get it done,” said IHS coach Stacy Bertrand. “Usually when that happens, it’s hard to win. But we kept fighting and it just kind of went our way.”
Having Hebert at the line in overtime was a welcome sight for Bertrand.
Hebert, who finished with 17 points, went 15-for-19 from the stripe on the night.
“When Kade went to the line, I had confidence,” said Betrand. “I knew he was going to go up there and make it. He made 15 free throws in a close game. If he doesn’t make those free throws, we don’t win.”
Triston Fontenot also played a key role in the victory, pumping in 24 points, including three 3-pointers to lead the Bulldogs.
Landon LeJeune added 10 points on the night, Chase Doucet scored nine, Brett Clay pitched in four and Dylan Hebert finished with two.
“I’m just so proud of these guys,” said Bertrand. “We could have given up a bunch of times during the game, but we hung in there and got the win.”
