Prep Roundup: Lady Pios top North Vermilion in league opener
CROWLEY – The Notre Dame Lady Pios shrugged off a slow start and used a big second half to slip past North Vermilion Tuesday in the District 6-3A opener for both teams.
The Lady Pios broke open a tight game in the final two frames and went on a 25-10 run to take a 37-21 victory at A.B. Dore Gym.
“Early on, I thought we took some good shots, but I also thought we rushed some shots,” said ND coach Nolan Theriot, whose team scored just three points in the opening frame. “But we did a much better job as the game progressed.
“We got in more of a rhythm in the second quarter and then in the second half, we made some adjustments and we were finally able to get something going.”
The Lady Pios began pounding the ball on the inside in the second half and fowards Madelyn LeJeune and Elise LeBeouf took over. The duo combined for 15 points in the final two frames to spark the run.
LeJeune finished the night with a game-high 18 points and LeBeouf had nine.
“We really wanted to establish the inside game because we felt we had an advantage in there and we wanted to give our post players a chance to make some plays,” said Theriot.
The Lady Pios led by seven at the end of the third quarter and outscored the Lady Patriots 14-5 in the fourth.
Hanna Esthay added five points, all in the second half, while Hunter LeBlanc had three and Alyssa Williams had two.
Pios fall to Church Point
CROWLEY – The Church Point Bears rallied from a nine-point deficit and outscored Notre Dame 20-8 in the fourth quarter to take a 59-56 victory over the Pios Tuesday evening.
“We let one slip away tonight,” said ND coach Donald Adams. “It was there for the taking and we just didn’t execute when we needed to. We had a great first quarter and we had a pretty good third quarter. But the fourth quarter, when we need to be at our best, that was our worst quarter of the game.”
The Pios jumped out to an 18-6 lead to start the game before the Bears rallied to cut the lead to 25-22 at the half.
The Pios increased their lead to 48-39 in the third quarter before the Bears made their run in the final frame.
“We have got to learn how to win and how to put people away when we have the chance,” said Adams.
Ethan Smith and Hunter Meche paced the Pios with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Claiton Johnson followed with eight points; Tyler Simar scored seven; John Duos and Joseph Stringfellow each had four; John Landry had three and Alex Thomas finished with one.
