West Ouachita beats Gents twice, advances to quarterfinals
WEST MONROE – The Crowley Gents were one victory away from advancing to the Class 4A thanks to a 6-2 victory over No. 8 seed West Ouachita on Friday night in the first game of a best-of-three series.
Unfortunately for the No. 9-seeded Gents, things didn’t go as planned on Saturday.
The Chiefs rallied from an early deficit to claim a 5-1 victory in Game 2, evening the series and sending the two teams to a third and deciding game.
That didn’t go well either: The hosts shut out the Gents, 8-0, eliminating CHS for the second straight year in the second round.
In the first game Saturday, Crowley’s Pate Broussard hit a sacrifice fly that plated Austin Duhon, who singled, to give the Gents a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
But the Chiefs rallied in the top of the fourth and scored four runs on three hits, one hit by pitch and an error. They added another run in the top of the fifth on Crowley’s second error of the game.
Broussard suffered the loss, allowing five runs, only one earned, on seven hits. He struck out four in seven innings.
Will Doughty had a double for the Gents while Duhon and Jon Riley Mouton each had a single.
In the second and final game, senior Joseph Tassin took the mound and limited the Gents to just one hit, a single by Duhon. Tassin walked two and struck out one in earning the complete-game victory.
The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before posting five more runs in the third off CHS hurler Ben Broussard. Bubba Daigle took over for Broussard in the fourth and walked three before giving way to Doughty, who gave up two runs in the final two frames.
The Gents committed four errors in the contest, leading to four unearned runs.
