Wolves slip past Bears in Acadia Parish Jamboree

CHURCH POINT - In the second game Thursday evening during the 2014 Acadia Parish Jambore, intra-parish rivals Rayne High and Church Point clashed for what was sure to be a battle of the defenses -- and fans got exactly that as the Wolves edged the Bears, 13-6.
Rayne High Head Coach Curt Ware liked what he saw Thursday. “We played a lot better than we did in the scrimmage,” referring to Rayne’s scoreless meeting against Catholic High of New Iberia. “I think we played well on both sides tonight.”
When speaking of scoring, Ware noted, “Jaylon (Reed) threw the ball well and our receivers did a good job getting to where they needed to be.”
Reed was 6-for-7 on the night with 94 yards, setting up two rushing touchdowns for the Wolves.
Receiving for the Wolves was all Trevon Fontenot averaging 15.7 yards per catch on the night.
“With mixing up our offense, we now have an opportunity to make big plays as the season continues,” Ware noted.
“But, we still have some work to do on offense,” Ware continued as the Wolves were limited to only 98 rushing yards on 31 attempts.
Leading Rayne’s rushing game were Byron Mouton (35 yards), Javon Cormier (24 yards) and Deontrey Wilridge with 42 yards and Rayne’s two touchdowns.
The kicking game was shared between Donald Doucet and Wyatt Ramsey who each split the uprights for an extra point.
Church Point’s only score of the night came late in the game on a 10-yard TD pass from Troy Matte and Tyler Wheeler for the 13-6 final score.
“I see some progress in our defense,” stated Ware Thursday as his Wolves held the Bears to three possessions in the red zone before allowing a score.
Leading Rayne tackles on defense were T.J. Bearb, Desmond Cole, Todd Brussard, Austin Coleman, Haven Doucet and Byron Mouton.
“Church Point’s always a tough team and I think we came through when we needed to tonight,” Ware concluded. “We have a good chance to be a good team -- that will come with more reps and the more we play as a team.”
