Zaunbrecher helps lead Lady Warriors past Iowa

IOWA – Northside Christian’s Kathryn Zaunbrecher has been the statistical leader for the Lady Warriors’ volleyball team all season long.
Monday was no different.
Zaunbrecher, a senior middle blocker, logged a career-best 29 kills, eight blocks and three aces to help lead the Lady Warriors to a 3-1 road victory over Iowa.
“Kathryn has just been dominant at the net for us,” said NCS coach Tracie Clement of Zaunbrecher, who also had nine digs. “If they set us up from the other side, she will put it away and she’s been real consistent. She’s grown so much and improved from last year to this year. She’s just been a great asset at the net.”
Zaunbrecher, however, wasn’t the only standout on the night in a marathon game that saw the Lady Warriors win the first two sets (25-20, 25-21) before dropping the third, 25-21. NCS then rallied in the fourth set to claim the match, 25-19.
“We’ve been working on playing as a team and we made some modifications on defense which has helped us tremendously to get better passes so we are able to get good sets and our girls are just putting it away.
“We had some really good volleys tonight and, as a whole, I think our team is playing really well right now.”
Victoria Monte also had a big night with eight kills, five blocks and seven digs while Madisyn Clement had six kills, 15 assists and 33 digs.
Leah Monte added six kills and 19 digs; Zoie Hanagriff had five kills, two aces and 28 digs; Sydni Guidry logged one kill, 19 assists and 12 digs; Chloe Dietz had eight assists and nine digs; Meghan Vincent recorded 29 digs and Brooke Stanford had one dig.
“This past weekend, we went to the Delcambre tournament and had some success and we placed second after losing to ESA, who we had already beaten twice,” said Clement. “Tonight, we didn’t worry about what had taken place in the past and we showed up and played great team ball and walked away with a victory.”
The Lady Warriors took on Beau Chene last night, but results of that contest were not available at press time.
Northside opens district play tonight at Westminster.
