The #5-ranked Lady Wolves entered the state playoffs this week as district champions with a 8-0 slate.
In addition to the district title, Rayne High drew a bye in the first round playoffs and will have to wait and see who they will play on Monday during the regional round of competition. They will meet today’s winner of the bi-district contest of #12 St. Martinville and #21 Iowa.
With a win on Monday, the Lady Wolves will once again qualify for the LHSAA State Volleyball Tournament on Nov. 12-14 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
Quarterfinals are slate for Nov. 12, the semis on Nov. 13, and the championship finals on Nov. 14.
“Since the new playoff schedule was implemented a few years ago,” stated Rayne Head Coach Stephanie Garrett, “we have yet to win a game at the tournament. That’s what the girls are aiming for - a win and maybe more.”
Garrett continued, “We have the talent to do that this year with eight seniors who have a lot o experience. They just have to play at the level I know they can.”
In observance of October as National Breast Cancer awareness month and in an attempt to help promote breast cancer awareness, the Rayne High Volleyball team hosted the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau in a “Block Out Cancer” volleyball game last week at the RHS north gym. The annual event raises money for the cause.
In addition to donations and sponsorships, the Lady Wolves sold “Block Out Cancer” t-shirts, which also served as admission into the game that day. Door prizes were awarded, games were played, and a sweet shop was enjoyed by all in attendance.
All proceeds collected will be donated to the Miles Perret Cancer Center in Lafayette which serves many local families. A formal presentation of the collected funds will be made at a later date.
