Popular ‘Cajun Face’ to be presented at The Liberty Oct. 3

The original play “Cajun Face” will be performed for one night only at the Liberty Theater in Eunice on Friday, Oct. 3.

Last November, good friends Lian Cheramie and Sarah Mikayla Brown, both Acting Up (in Acadiana) company members, wrote and performed in the two-woman show “Cajun Face” at Acadiana Center for the Arts. Expecting a fun and short run, the writers/performers were blown away by the outpouring of enthusiasm and long lines as word spread about the show. For months afterwards, they were stopped on the street by people asking them, “When are you gonna bring the show back? I have to bring all my aunts and cousins!”

Presented by the city of Eunice, the multi-media “Cajun Face” is a collection of vignettes that reflect Cheramie’s and Brown’s experiences as young Cajuns living in Acadiana. Humorous, personal and poignant, “Cajun Face” themes include families, defining what it means to be Cajun, dating and the decision to leave or stay in Louisiana. It features two songs and video interviews from members of the community.

Brown returned to Acadiana in 2012 after living in Chicago for nearly a decade. Her experiences living in the “big city” and returning “home” are explored in the piece, and will likely resonate with many in her generation who have left home, or those who have considered the benefits and costs of a move.

Alternately, Cheramie, after moving around a great deal as a child, has chosen to live her adult life in Lafayette, personally witnessing the cultural investment of many young people in Acadiana as they embrace, grow to understand and sometimes struggle with their unique heritage.

Community members had to this to say about the production:

“Cajunface is the story of life in south Louisiana from the point of view of two young women coming of age in the 21st century. It resonates with the universal themes of searching for oneself and one’s soul mate and evokes images and sounds that can only have sprung up from the bayou. Plus, it’s funny funny and you may even learn a new dance move.” – David Cheramie, Bayou Vermilion District

“An uproariously funny and lively look at cultural identity and gender, Cajun Face is a two-woman tour de force — an accessible, familiar celebration of what to outsiders is an exotic culture. Brown and Cheramie manage to juggle reverence and sacred cow poking with comedic aplomb.”  – Walter Pierce, IND Monthly

The show starts at 6:30 p.m., with the doors opening at 5:30 p.m. A talk-back will follow.

Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.
