Each of the Roberts Cove Germanfest Singers’ practices begins with “Maria zu lieben,” a singing prayer to the Blessed Mother asking her for help and guidance with their work.

Practice makes perfect for Germanfest

The Roberts Cove Germanfest Singers have been fine-tuning their notes and German pronunciation in preparation for the 20th anniversary celebration of the Roberts Cove Germanfest scheduled for October 4-5.

The group will perform both days at 1:30 p.m. under the big tent on the St. Leo Church grounds.

The more than 40 singers come not just from Roberts Cove and Acadia Parish, but all over the state, including Lake Charles, Shreveport, Lafayette and Baton Rouge.

Bernadette Monzelun Ponton of Lake Charles serves as director, with Josie Thevis of Roberts Cove as coordinator. The group is privileged to have Anna Kormesser of Jennings, a native of Germany, to add special emphasis with her outstanding yodeling.

Simone DuBois of Crowley plays the piano accordion, which has just been refurbished and amplified. Guitar players are Ted Jacques and his grandson from Lafayette and Denise Leonards of Roberts Cove.

The Germanfest Singers originated years ago with the many family reunions held in October and the singing and musical instruments added to the celebrations by family members.
