The Rice City Classic Car Show, Shine and Stroll and the Antique Tractor and Implement Show are being held in conjunction with each other this Saturday.
With both events — along with a motorcycle show at the MetLife Building — sure to draw a large crowd downtown, Mayor Greg Jones wanted for people to come out and have a good time without forgetting their civic duty.
“I hope that as many people as possible come out and have a good time in a family environment,” he said. “But don’t forget to vote on your way here.”
Crowley’s chief of police election is also on Saturday.
With the weather expected to be perfect and more than 100 classic cars, many from out-of-state, expected to line N. Parkerson Avenue, those who wish to attend are urged to arrive early (the events last from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.) and park along the side streets. All the streets, from the Acadia Parish Courthouse to Second Street/U.S. Hwy. 90 that lead onto North Parkerson Avenue will be blocked off at the Parkerson Avenue intersection early Saturday.
Anyone who leaves a car parked along Crowley’s main thoroughfare during the event may be trapped for several hours.
Organizers of the event, who met Tuesday night at City Hall, are expecting a very successful day.
Mike Libby and Bert and Sonia Simon, veterans of many car shows, say that the annual event will continue to grow each year as those who participate inform people about the event through word of mouth.
“The people who attend these shows are like a traveling family,” said Libby, who cited the classic car shows in Lake Arthur and False River as examples of shows that had grown into huge events over the years.
Registration for the car show will continue until Saturday morning. Anyone who registers prior to Saturday will be charged $20. Anyone who registers the day of the event will be charged $25.
There is also going to be a motorcycle show in the parking lot of the MetLife building.
The Antique Tractor and Implement Show, which features a collection of older model farming implements, equipment and engines, some nearly a century old, enjoyed a successful turnout during its inaugural event last year. The event, which is held on the Wells Fargo Building’s ground south of the car show, is billed as a chance to learn about Acadia Parish’s extensive agricultural history.
KSIG (1450 AM) will be broadcasting live from the event. There will also be food, beverages, a 50/50 raffle and numerous other activities. Out-of-towners at the event will be given a chance to stroll along downtown Crowley and see the numerous businesses that the city has to offer.
No ice chests, glass containers or pets will be allowed inside the area.
All proceeds from both events will benefit the Autism Society of America, the Acadia Cultural Rice Museum and Agricultural Park and the Crowley Main Street Program. Anyone who wishes to register for the event can get a registration form at Crowley City Hall.
