The Crowley City Council met Tuesday night to discuss an array of issues including the approval of a beer permit for a local restaurant, a lease for the ASSIST Agency’s office space at the Enterprise Center and the closure of a section of Parkerson Avenue for the annual Gumbo Cookoff.

During the Public Safety Committee’s  report, Chairman Lyle Fogleman introduced a motion to consider a request for the soon-to-be operational Fire Protection District 11 to enter into a mutual aid agreement for several areas that lie within the new district.

Among these areas are: Panther Lane, Highway 98 to Stephanie Road, Stephanie Road on both sides from Roy LeBlanc Road to Ohlenforst Road, Ebenezer Road west side from Highway 90 to Lovell Road, Standard Mill Road on both sides from Ebenezer Road to Boudreaux Road, all of Boudreaux Road, Monroe Road, Lovell Road on the north side from Ebenezer Road to Dogpatch Road, all of Dogpatch Road and the intersection of Leger Road and Wilder Road on the west side of Leger Road and north side of Wilder Road.

“The agreement allows us (Crowley Fire Department) to help them in these areas and improves the fire rating for the area,” said Mayor Greg Jones.

The council also agreed to close Parkerson Avenue from Front Street to First Street on Nov. 15 for the annual Gumbo Cookoff. The event’s popularity has taken off in recent years and attendance has grown steadily over its 10-year existence.

The council also agreed to a lease for the ASSIST Agency to continue to have office space in the Crowley Enterprise Center. The group has been operating out of the building for several years now.

A new 2014 Class A beer permit was approved for Sheryl Bartlett’s Burger Zone restaurant. The restaurant recently opened its new location at 1426 North Parkerson Ave.

The council also passed an ordinance which adopts, finalizes and implements the city’s operating budgets for the fiscal year beginning Sept. 1, and ending on Aug. 31, 2015.

The vote was unanimous.

The next Crowley City Council meeting will be held on Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. Committee meetings will be on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m.
