Council targets unkept properties

During their Tuesday meeting, the Crowley City Council moved forward on the condemnations of four properties in the city and discussed building a football field at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. 

At the outset of meeting, Crowley Chief of Police K.P. Gibson, who was in full uniform for a ceremony honoring Crowley’s fallen officers, gave the invocation. 

“We would especially like to pray for the families of officers who were killed in the line of duty this evening,” said Gibson. 

Mayor Greg Jones then recognized Nancy Broadhurst, Patti Lawrence and Dr. Ezora Proctor for the work they have done in regards to the annual Louisiana Cleanest City Contest. 

The four properties that were discussed are located at the corner of Fourth Street and Avenue C, 1201 W. Seventh St., 1214 W. Eighth St. and 917 E. Sixth St. 

The council moved forward with the condemnation proceedings on all four properties with the Fourth Street and Seventh Street locations now set for public hearings. The other two are set for demolition. 

A walking track was set to come before the council for a vote, however, Alderman Vernon “Step” Martin rescinded the scheduled motion. 

“After listening to citizens, I’ve learned that what they would rather have is a football field at the center,” he said. 

The council agreed and unanimously voted to construct the field. 

Martin recognized a group of young boys and a football coach who were in attendance.
