District 11 agreement extended

During the Crowley City Council’s meeting on Tuesday, the city agreed to extend the current arrangement which provides emergency responses for Crowley Fire Service Area Protection District 11. The extension will last for six months and will expire on July 15. 

The extension was requested by Crowley Fireman Chad Monceaux, who sits on the board which is working to get the area a volunteer fire department. Monceaux said in a letter to the council that “as of January 15, 2014, we will not be able to take over.”

He requested that the council continue to pay the Crowley Fire Department under the same terms of the current agreement for a continuance of six months. 

District 11 was created when the city realized that it would be illegal to respond to emergency calls outside the recognized Crowley city limits.

Following a months-long dispute, the Acadia Parish Police Jury and the Crowley City Council agreed to pay the Crowley Fire Department to provide emergency protection for the area, which surrounds the city of Crowley on all sides.  

In other city business, the council announced the hiring of Valerie Hoffpauir and Tony Duhon. Hoffpauir will serve as the city’s tax clerk and Duhon will work for code enforcement. 

The next Crowley city council meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
