A contract has been awarded and as soon as weather permits, work should begin in earnest on the construction of Rayne Veterans Park.
Mike Pitre Concrete Finishing of Rayne was awarded the contract for the park.
In a recent letter to the editor, Larry Guidry, chairman of the task force charged with developing the site in Gossen Memorial Park, explained that “weather is and has been one of the major factors in delaying the dirt work in the park area.”
He added that “members of the task force are even more frustrated and disappointed with several impediments” in the construction of the park.
Mayor Chuck Robichaux said the contract is on a “per foot” basis and that he expects the labor cost to come in at about $5,875 and the cement to cost around $8,000.
“With the tablets and the light poles and everything, we’re figuring about $45,000 for the first phase of work on the park,” Robichaux said.
To date, funding on hand for the Veterans Park stands at $84,672 — that’s $34,075 in brick sales, $10,497 in donations and $40,100 from the city.
The park is located at the intersection of Gossen Memorial Drive and Oak Street and will honor servicemen and women of all of the nation’s military branches — both living and deceased.
The brick pavers are $75 each and can be ordered at Rayne City Hall.
