Rayne Patrol Officers Jeremy Abshire and Kyle Seaux said they wouldn’t trade the two days they spent in Baton Rouge for anything.
After the July 17 ambush shooting that killed two Baton Rouge police officers and a deputy sheriff, and left three other officers wounded, law enforcement officers from across the country converged on Louisiana’s capital city in a show of support.
Among them were Abshire and Seaux from the Rayne Police Department.
“We were right there at Precinct 1 — ground zero for the shooting,” said Abshire. “It was amazing to see the camaraderie of these officers and how they overcame the obstacles of what had happened.”
Abshire and Seaux said they were put directly to work upon their arrival.
“There wasn’t any touring or sightseeing,” said Abshire. “We went straight to work.”
The two agree that police work is pretty much the same everywhere, “but it was just so much more intense and on a much larger scale than what we’re used to here,” Abshire said.
“It was very humbling,” said Seaux. “No words can describe what it was like and it was an honor for me to go and help.
“It was really a once in a lifetime experience and I know that they appreciated us being there right off the bat.”
Abshire agreed.
“I’ll never forget it. We bonded with them immediately and it inspired me to see them work so hard against all the obstacles they face.”
The two Rayne officers spent two days on patrol in Baton Rouge. Both said they wish it could have been more.
