Schexnider returning to Africa

Kirk Schexnider isn’t one to leave a job incomplete.
Last year when he went to Malawi, Africa, Schexnider repaired homes, built and repaired water systems and performed several other jobs related to improving the quality of life for those living in the village of Amirikia.
“The kids there need help,” said Schexnider. “There is nobody to pay for the supplies and services that they need. They have no government support.”
Schexnider’s mission is done in conjunction with the work that Northside Assembly of God (his church) does with ministries across the world. He will be staying at the Victory Christian Children’s Home (VCCH) during his visit, just like he did last year.
VCCH was formed by Dr. Charles and Gladys Trombley of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, after they had received letters from Malawian pastors stating that they had many orphans — many of whom were the children of AIDS victims — that needed care. In response, VCCH opened up an orphanage and a school for the children.
Many of the children, as funds become available, are able to graduate and attend colleges or trade schools to further their education.
Aside from the construction and maintenance work Schexnider does while he is there, he also brings a taste of Louisiana to the people in the village.
“Last year while I was there, a large shipment of rice, beans and milk arrived which was sent generously through the offerings of fellow Christians and businesses in Crowley,” he said. “I made them a red beans and rice meal and they just loved it. To see the looks on their faces while they ate it was wonderful.”
Schexnider is counting on the generosity of Crowley residents to help him with his work/travels this year.
“Last year I went there with $1,500 and I spent that on supplies the first day I was there,” he said. “Remodeling, building, plumbing and electrical work is expensive just for materials,” he said. “There is plenty of time to donate (Schexnider leaves on July 29) and I truly appreciate everyone who helps me and the children out.”
