Fourth grader proposes ‘loan’ plan to supply sports equipment for less fortunate youngsters

Ethan Cormier, a fourth grader at South Rayne Elementary, conceived a plan of how to loan sports equipment to less fortunate youngsters when he was 9 years old. He shared his concept with the mayor and City Council Monday night.
His mother, Crystal, explained Ethan’s plan grew out of a game of catch he had with another boy last year. When Ethan asked on what team the boy played, he was told the friend and a another playmate didn’t play on a team because their family could not afford the registration fee or to buy the needed equipment.
That sparked Ethan’s imagination and, after talking with his mother and father, Shannon, Ethan decided to ask friends and acquaintances to donate unused or outgrown equipment and clothing to him instead of discarding it or donating it to Goodwill or other charities.
Last year, while his mother was paying an electric bill at City Hall, Ethan asked to meet Mayor Roland Boudreaux.
Because of his impromptu request, Ethan met the mayor who listened and encouraged him. Boudreaux discussed storing Ethan’s collection sports equipment with Rec Director Dwayne Derise in the Green Room.
In March, during another bill paying trip to City Hall, Ethan asked to meet with the new mayor to get his blessing. “He wanted the assurance of the new mayor,” explained his mother.
Crystal remarked Mayor Robichaux was surprised and happy to discover such a kind-hearted and thoughtful young citizen.
Mayor Robichaux invited Ethan to attend the April Council meeting.
Ethan was well-prepared as he stepped to the podium and proceeded to describe his goal to collect sports equipment which he could then lend out. He even announced that he would accept cash donations.
Following his brief presentation, Ethan received a round of applause from the those in the audience.
Asked about that how to arrange donations for her son, his mother suggested donors call her at 337-581-4596 and leave a message. She would then return the calls.
Mrs. Cormier also noted that Ethan now has some four boxes and several bags which he plans to store in the Green Room.
She emphasized Ethan plans his venture solely as a loan program and expects the equipment to be returned at the end of a baseball or football season so it can be used by other youngsters. She also envisions some form of an application to ensure that there is a genuine need and not a ploy to get something without paying.
