SLCC awards scholarships

Acadia Parish students among 40 plus recipients

LAFAYETTE – More than $110,000 in scholarships was awarded to more than 40 students at South Louisiana Community College for the current academic year. This year’s scholarships total is the largest in college history.
Through the generosity of companies and individuals in Acadiana, these students will have a portion or nearly all of their education for the fall and/or spring semesters paid.
Some of the area donors who provided scholarships included Shell, Elder Outreach, Home Furniture, KATC TV-3, and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. Several families and businesses across Acadiana also celebrated the lives and legacies of deceased family members or co-workers by establishing memorial scholarships in their names.
“These scholarships are game-changers for our students,” said Lana Fontenot, SLCC’s director of development. “The tuition assistance eases the financial pressures of college. Because of our generous donors, our students are better able to focus on their educational success at SLCC.”
The first-ever Faculty and Staff Scholarships for Students was awarded this year, solely from contributions from the college’s employees through an Employee Giving Drive. The three recipients are Hunter Tauzin of Breaux Bridge, Grant Klentzman of New Iberia, and Christian Veronie of Lafayette.
Acadia scholarships and recipients include:
•Acadia General Hospital Auxiliary Healthcare Scholarship: Mary Landry of Crowley
•C.L. Jack Stelly & Associates Scholarship: Gail Johnson of Duson
•Elder Outreach Nursing and Rehabilitation – Crowley Scholarship: Angela Semien of Crowley
•Fugro Chance Land Surveys Scholarship: Veronica Johnson of Duson
•Home Furniture & KATC Scholarship: Paige Savoie of Church Point
•Social Science Psychology Scholarship: Bennett LaMotte of Duson
Students have another opportunity in the fall to obtain a scholarship to SLCC. Through the college’s “Striding for Scholarships” 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run on October 17, students can participate for a chance to win a scholarship on Race Day. Students and the public can sign up at solacc.edu/5K.
