Mitchell MVP in Cypriot cage championship

LIMASSOL, Cyprus – Former St. Martinville Sr. High and LSU standout Darrel Mitchell Jr. was named the MVP of the national basketball cup championship game played here March 8.

Mitchell scored 17 points to help his Proteas EKA AEL team to a 76-73 victory over Seastar APOEL in the national championship game of the Cypriot EuroBasket men’s basketball tournament.

Proteas went on to defeat Eclipse Jet Amsterdam in the quarterfinals of the 2009 EuroChallenge playoffs, winning two games in the best-of-three series to reach the Final Four of the playoffs which continue next month.

Mitchell’s father, SMSH coach Darrel Mitchell Sr., was able to attend the national cup championship game and watch his son in action. “It was a great trip,” the elder Mitchell said last week. “That area is a really beautiful place to visit.”
