One big garage sale

BREAUX BRIDGE – The fourth Citywide Garage Sale and Outdoor Flea Market is six days out as this is being written, and although it’s always risky to count on it, the long-range forecast looks perfect. Sunny, fair – and the only named storm in the Atlantic looks like it's headed for Scotland!
When Breaux Bridge throws a party, the only thing that can usually spoil it is really bad weather, a deluge or a gale.
What effect a global economic train wreck might have remains to be seen.
Based on past performances, organizers are expecting more than 7,000 visitors to the Breaux Bridge Citywide Garage Sale Saturday, Oct. 4. At last count there were 75 participants, including 30 vendors that will be set up for the Outdoor Flea Market in Veteran’s Memorial Park downtown. Antique and gift stores in and around the historic downtown will host outdoor sidewalk sales, and private garage sales will spring up on the thoroughfares leading into Breaux Bridge as well as many of the neighborhood streets in the city.
“We look forward to welcoming all the visitors who come to this event year after year and particularly this year since this event can certainly be a welcomed and affordable outing considering all the stress created from the current economic crisis and recent hurricanes,” says Denise Mitchell, owner of Main Street Antiques and member of the Breaux Bridge Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Organizer Lynn Roy, owner of Something Old, Something New, says “Antique, Flea Market and Gift Boutiques have been stocking up for months for this event. This citywide sale not only offers fabulous antique and vintage items at rock-bottom prices but also keeps reusable items out of our landfills. Many cities, all over the country are hosting events such as this in an effort to encourage recycling and conservation.”
