Christopher Klumpp chosen as Junior Rice Farmer of the Year by International Rice Festival

CROWLEY – The 77th International Rice Festival will recognize Christopher Garrett Klumpp as the 2013 Junior Farmer of the Year as announced by Romona T. Credeur, festival president. The festival is slated for the weekend of October 17-20, 2013 in downtown Crowley.

Christopher is the 19-year-old son of Rickey Klumpp and Felisha Myers of Morse. He has two sisters. Christopher is the grandson of Walter Klumpp Sr. and Mary Klumpp of Basile and Walter Myers and Elderen Myers of Midland.

Christopher and his family live on the family farm in Morse, LA.  The family farm consists of 900 acres of rice, soybeans, and cattle.

Christopher is a 2013 graduate of Midland High School, where he was a member of the Midland High FFA Chapter for four years. He received the Green Hand award and Agribusiness award.  He participated in state conventions with fellow FFA members. He showed steers for three years and competed in parish, district, and state levels where he won Reserve Louisiana Breed Champion.

Growing up in a farming family helped Christopher learn the duties and responsibilities of a farmer from an early age.  His responsibilities include taking care of the farms in both the Morse and Mermentau areas. Christopher has been working on the family farm for 15 years and currently farms his own land consisting of 250 acres.

His hobbies include being in the outdoors hunting and fishing, spending time with his family, helping his uncle on his farm when needed, and attending church.

His agricultural roots and dedication to farming is evident in his passion for the industry. Christopher is a fourth generation rice farmer on the family farm.

Christopher was chosen by Brian Maloid, Farm Loan Manager, USDA Farm Service Agency and his staff from a group of young deserving men nominated by FFA/Ag Teachers of Acadia Parish Schools.

The International Rice Festival will honor Christopher at the Queen’s Ball to be held on Sept. 21 at the Rice Festival Building.
