Gents land four on 4-4A All-District squad
CROWLEY – When it came to the Crowley Gents, expectations weren’t particularly high heading into the 2013 prep football season.
And rightfully so.
After all, the Gents were coming off a 2-8 campaign, and worse, they were moving up in competition from Class 3A to 4A.
Add in the fact that the Gents were starting a large group of underclassmen and the possibilities of a big turnaround seemed remote at best.
But led by a small, yet determined, group of seniors, the young squad got better by the week and went on to win a surprising seven games and finish in a three-way tie for second place in District 4-4A with Eunice and Rayne.
Two weeks later, their season ended in the second round of the state playoffs, but not before they posted one of the biggest turnarounds of the 2013 season.
Not surprisingly, those efforts were rewarded when coaches met to select the District 4-4A All-District teams.
The Gents landed a total of 11 players on the units, including three players on the first-team offensive unit - quarterback Pate Broussard, tight end Jerry Dragin and offensive lineman Marshal Wilbert.
Broussard, a sophomore in his first year as a starter, surpassed expectations by completing 122 passes for 1,758 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also picked up 63 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20 rushes.
Dragin was one of Broussard’s main targets through the air. The senior hauled in 28 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns.
Marshal, a senior, led an offensive line that paved the way for second-team running backs Ty’Von Griffin and Chris Lewis. Griffin, a sophomore, posted 1,093 yards and 14 touchdowns on 203 carries while Lewis picked up 988 yards and 11 touchdowns on 175 carries.
Crowley’s JeJuan Delco also earned first-team honors on the defensive line.
Rayne running back Trent Duhon took home one of the league’s top honors when he was named the Offensive MVP. Duhon rushed for 1,389 yards and 21 touchdowns while also hauling in eight passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns.
The Wolves also landed four more players on the first-team offensive unit in linemen Matt Dore, Brennon Bourque and Grant Abshire as well as place kicker Ty Delahoussaye.
Delahoussaye was also named the second-team punter.
Rayne’s Desmond Cole also earned a spot on the defensive line.
Crowley’s Griffin and Lewis are joined on the second-team offensive squad by teammates Terrell Thomas at wide receiver and Christian Breaux on the offensive line.
Thomas led all receivers with 27 catches for 558 yards and six touchdowns.
Rayne’s Hunter Adkins was named to the second team at defensive lineman.
The Gents also nailed down three spots on the defensive second team in linebacker Ryan Girard, defensive back Curtis Broxton and return specialist Bryston Domino.
Honorable mentions for the Gents include offensive lineman John Cortez, wide receiver Jacq’Co Price, defensive lineman Kaj LeMaire, defensive backs Alex Ashby and Tiron Foreman and linebackers Jacob and Josh Doucet.
