Prep Roundup: Pios split in final day of tourney

LAKE CHARLES – The Notre Dame Pioneers proved that you don’t always need to tear the cover off of the baseball to produce runs.
With Jennings’ Caleb Chaisson wheeling and dealing on the mound, the Pios took advantage of three walks and three Bulldogs errors to slip away with a 4-0 victory despite not logging a single hit in the contest.
With the victory, the Pios improved to 3-5 on the season heading into tonight’s home contest against St. Edmund at 6 o’clock.
“We are kind of struggling at the plate right now, but it was good that we were able to find a way to get on base and produce some runs,” said ND coach Steve Soper. “The guys did a good job of finding a way to scratch some runs across.”
Chaisson pitched all six innings for the Bulldogs, giving up just three walks while striking out three.
“He did a great job of getting ahead early and really bearing down on us and putting us in bad counts,” said Soper of Chiasson. “He had a good breaking ball which really kept us off balance, but the kids did a really good job of grinding out at-bats. Whether it was hits, walks, hit by pitches or errors, they have really battled at the plate and grinded it out to push runs across.”
Gavin Bourgeois got the start on the mound for the Pios and surrendered just one hit while striking out three before giving way to Joe Faulk in the middle of the third inning due to some arm soreness.
Faulk was just as effective as Bourgeois. He went the final 4 1/3 innings and surrendered two hits and two walks while striking out five to earn the victory.
“Gavin and Joe did a great job on the mound. We’re going to win a lot of games if we don’t give up any runs,” said Soper.
“I thought Joe did a really good job of coming in on short notice. We were going to use him for maybe the last two innings, but he came in early and gave us a really good chance to win the game.”
The Pios pushed across a run in the bottom of the first inning when Brad Stoma reached base on a fielder’s choice and was at third when Jacques Thibodeaux drew a walk. Stoma scored when Jennings elected to throw down to try and get Thibodeaux on a steal attempt.
The Pios added two more runs in the third courtesy of an RBI groundout by Bourgeois and an error. Bourgeois recorded another RBI on a groundout in the fifth inning.
The Pios returned to action later in the day to take on Class 5A powerhouse Barbe and the offensive woe’s continued.
The Pios logged just one hit on the night and dropped a 6-0 decision to the home-standing Bucs.
Barbe’s pitcher sat the first 19 Pios down in order before Alex Rozas broke up the perfect game bid in the seventh inning with a one-out single to center field.
The game ended one batter later when Thibodeaux grounded into a double play.
“It was kind of a reoccurring theme with them getting ahead of us early and bearing down,” said Soper. “We were kind of timid early in the count as far as not pulling the trigger, which was disappointing.
“It was just one of those days where we really struggled the whole day at the plate.”
