Wolves host Catholic High in Scrimmage

RAYNE - Rayne High hosted Catholic High of New Iberia Friday

evening during opening football action of the 2014 season,

and from all indications, the young Wolves show promise.

“We played a good team here tonight,” stated Rayne High

Head Coach Curt Ware following Friday’s scrimmage. “But

like in all games this early in the season, there’s always

room for improvement.”

The Wolves hosted a fast-paced, pre-season ranked team

“With the possibility of winning a state championship,”

as noted by Ware of Catholic High. “They are fast, play

well on both sides, and have a quarterback who has already

signed with Ole Miss. But, we had a couple good series -- I

gotta give our guys that.”

The Wolves moved the ball well early on in the scrimmage,

both on the ground and in the air with a couple of targets

hit by sophomore quarterback Jaylon Reed.

“Jaylon has matured both ways,” commented Ware of his

new quarterback. “He’s pretty mobile in the pocket and

sees the field well. That will only get better as the weeks

go by and he has more experience.”

The Wolves also looked well on the ground Friday with

returners Byron Mouton and Javon Cormier running the ball

well, while senior transfer John Michael Besse hit the seams

from behind the line.

On offense, Ware noted, “We have a few guys coming back

who did well tonight. Byron (Mouton) turned in a good catch

and a couple of runs and Javon (Cormier) carried the ball

well. For sure,John Michael (Besse) will help us out a lot

this season.”

Ware concluded, “I think we competed well tonight against

a good team. At this time in the season, if you can compete,

walk off the field in good shape having played up to your

potential with no injuries, that’s all you can ask for.

I’m sure we will improve as the weeks pass.”

Returning half their line on both sides of the ball,

offensive line coach Kaine Guidry liked what he saw Friday.

“We’re running our offense almost with a new line-up,“

noted offensive coach Kaine Guidry. “We run the same

offense as they (Catholic High) do, so we both kinda knew

what to expect. But, I saw us tire out after our second

eight.”

Guidry continued, “Jaylon (Reed) and Donald (Doucet) both

did well running the plays and getting some throws this

early on. Being only sophomores, you can’t ask for much

more.”

Reed is stepping into the quarterback slot this season, up

from last season’s defensive corner and backup QB.

The Wolves are slated to participate in the Acadia Parish

Jamboree on Thursday when they meet hosting Church Point in

the second game of the night. The first game will see Iota

meet Crowley at 6:30 p.m. at Bear Stadium.
