Rayne High class of ‘79 holds 35-year reunion
The Rayne High School graduating class of 1979 gathered on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at Chef Roy’s Frog City Café in celebration of their 35-year class reunion.
Reunion committee members presenting the reunion were Mary Broussard Reed, Pam Cary Guidry, Priscilla Trahan Deshotel, Jackie Prejean, Billie Meyer, Annette Trahan, Monique Domingue Morelan, Hilda Wiltz and Francis Peltier Savoy.
Classmates and guests were welcomed to a purple and gold decor in the restaurant’s banquet room, complete with purple and gold fresh flower arrangements accented with candles and balloons at each table. A spring bouquet was noted at the guest registry table, in addition to the special class cake table.
Memorabilia displays of the past, including high school days, past reunions and family pictures, were also found throughout the reception area.
Classmates and guests were served crawfish Mardi Gras pasta, bite-size catfish, spring rolls, meat pies, chips and salsa, snack mix, assorted beverages, cocktails and dessert including a special “Welcome Back Class of ‘79” 35-year reunion cake. The chocolate cake featured half chocolate filling and half Bavarian cream filling and designed with purple, gold and white tones.
Entertainment was provided by DJ Phil Peltier who provided music from the 70’s era. Special entertainment was also provided by Johnny Guidry, aka “J-Honnay” who sang and danced for the audience.
The 49 classmates and guests attended the reunion from Rayne, Mire, Youngsville, Iowa, Gonzales, Breaux Bridge, Zachary, Lafayette, and Houston, Texas.
Remembered during a special Mass held earlier in the day at St. Joseph Catholic Church were deceased classmates, including Marcus Venable, Anthony Decluit, Donald Taylor, Linda Schultz Stelly, Terry Powers, Ricky Morgan, Debbie Melancon Stutes, Cheryle Thomas, Pamela Jones Alex, Lerone Rubin and Melvin LeBlanc.
Family members were special guests during the Memorial Mass and presented flowers on behald of their loved ones. During the reunion, deceased classmates were remembered in prayer and 11 balloons were released in their memory.
Awards were presented in a number of categories, including:
Chris Plattsmier - youngest child;
John “Chick” Quebodeaux - most grandchildren;
Pam Guidry - youngest grandchild;
Dallas Cormier - oldest grandchild;
Mona Guidry Lopez - married longest;
Donnie Doga - most recently married;
Sharen Wynn, Sallas Cormier and Lee Cutrer - traveled farthest to attend reunion (Texas);
Kathy Alleman Nero - least changed female;
Todd Trahan - least changed male’
HIlda Wiltz - least changed outfit.
Classmates also participated in a number of Homecoming events, including Thursday’s Homecoming Parade and Friday’s Homecoming Game.
Class officers were president Denise Thibodeaux, vice-president HIlda Wiltz, secretary Mary Broussard and treasurer Karen Wynn.
Class colors were purple and gold, with a spring bouquet serving as the class flower. The class song was, “We may never pass this way again” by Seals and Crofts.
The class motto was, “We the class of ‘79 gained our knowledge and self-discipline and are now on the road to search for a new door to open.”
