EUNICE - Rayne High collected their second district win of the 2014 season Friday with a 20-13 score over Eunice High.
The Rayne win was a game of two halves, the first half filled with all of the game’s scoring, and the second dealt with a defensive struggle for both squads.
The Wolves scored on their first possession of the night, the opening kickoff. The 85-yard scoring drive was filled with rushing gains by John Michael Besse and Deotrey Wilridge. Jaylon Reed returned at quarterback from a week off due to an injury and found Wilridge for a couple completions, setting up a four-yard TD run by Besse for a 6-0 Rayne lead deep into the first quarter of play.
Eunice answered with their portion of Friday’s rushing game with an 82-yard scoring drive of their own, completed with a 22-yard TD run by Bobcat Darrin Serie. The extra point placed Eunice just ahead of the Wolves the only time in the ballgame, 7-6.
The Wolves jumped ahead of the Bobcats midway through the second quarter of action with a Reed quarterback keeper from a yard out on the heels of a 60-yard scoring drive led by Wilridge and Besse. The Wolves recorded a two-point conversion with a Besse run and a 14-7 lead
The Rayne defense then kicked it up a knotch near midfield when defender Hunter Keely collected a Eunice fumble and ran it in 53 yards for a Wolf score. Donald Doucet split the uprights for a 20-7 Rayne lead.
The final score of the first half was delivered by the Bobcats with the help of a couple of Rayne penalties with the Wolves leading 20-13 for the halftime break.
The second half of the ballgame was an offensive struggle for both squads as the defense for both Rayne and Eunice kept their competitor out of the end zone, allowing the 20-13 halftime score stand as the final for the ballgame.
The Wolves turned in 218 offensive yards on the night with 57 plays as compared to Eunice’s 51 plays for 204 yards.
The Rayne running game was led by Deontrey Wilridge with 120 yards o 27 carries. John Michael Besse had 13 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown, while Javon Cormier recorded three carries.
Reed, who returned at the quarterback slot following a week-long injury, recorded four completions on eight attempts for 49 yards, in addition to his rushing touchdown.
Rayne receivers for the win were John Michael Besse with 3 completions for 45 yards, and Trevon Fontenot with a grab for four yards.
The Rayne defense, which collected two of three Bobcat fumbles, limited Eunice’s running game to only 112 yards.
Leading Rayne tackles for the win was Desmond Cole with 8 tackles including 7 solos, two tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.
Completing the Rayne defense were Donavon Cormier (5 tac, 3 solo), Cameron Gibson (5 and 5), Nicky Faucheux (3 and 1), and Hunter Keely, Jaquan Cormier and Todd Broussard (3 and 2). Austin Coleman added a tackle and solo, along with a tackle for loss and a quarterback sack.
The Wolves will return to Wolf Stadium on Friday where they will take on intra-parish rival Crowley High. Both teams enter the contest with a single district loss, each to LaGrange.
