Griffin's big night highlights Grid Stars
CROWLEY – Ty’Von Griffin has had big nights before.
Through eight games of the 2014 season, he had rushed for 100 yards or better six times and had 13 touchdowns heading into last Friday’s contest against the state’s eighth-ranked Rayne Wolves.
Friday, however, was his biggest night yet.
The junior tailback shredded the Wolves’ defense time and again for a career-best 288 yards and five touchdowns in helping lead the Gents to a 33-21 victory.
In addition to being a personal best, his performance was more than enough to earn him top honors on this week’s edition of Acadia Parish Grid Stars.
Griffin found the end zone four times in the first half and went into the locker room with 178 yards on 21 carries under his belt. He scored on a 25-yard bust two plays into the game and then capped a 63-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run just over two minutes later.
Griffin’s 2-yard touchdown run with just over nine minutes to go in the half propelled the Gents to a 20-0 advantage before he broke loose on a 71-yard touchdown run that sent his squad into the locker room with a 26-0 lead.
His 3-yard touchdown run with 7:37 remaining in the fourth quarter was his fifth of the night, tying his five-touchdown effort that he set in Week 1 against Wossman.
CHS quarterback Pate Broussard also had an impressive night despite not throwing for a touchdown. He completed 11 of 16 pass attempts for 129 yards. His top receiver was Terrell Thomas, who also had an interception on defense, with five catches for 60 yards.
Both Griffin and Broussard are now part of the 1,000 yard club - Griffin is at 1,117 yards and 17 touchdowns on 174 carries despite missing one game with an injury; Broussard has completed 81 passes for 1,187 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Rayne’s Deontrey Wilridge and John Michael Besse each turned in impressive performances as well in a losing effort.
Wilridge, a sophomore, picked up 130 yards rushing and a touchdown on 21 carries.
Besse, a senior, was all over the field. He posted five carries for 32 yards, had three receptions for 38 yards and had three kick returns for 57 yards. He was also the Wolves’ leading tackler with seven solo stops and three assists.
Also earning recognition were Notre Dame’s Damon Comeaux, Ivy Robichaux and Brad Stoma, Church Point’s Deion Monroe and Frederick Williams and Iota’s Kaleb Guillory.
Comeaux picked up 130 yards and one touchdown on nine carries for the Pios in their 57-0 thrashing of Abbeville Friday. He had an 83-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
Robichaux scored twice on the night, once on a 1-yard run and then again on 45-yard pass from Stoma.
Overall, Stoma completed 10 of 13 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns. He also had scoring strikes to Dillan Gilbert from five yards out and Hunter Miller from 10 yards out.
Monroe posted 92 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries in the Bears’ 56-14 blowout of Port Barre.
Williams picked up 70 yards on four carries on the night. His lone rushing touchdown was a 40-yard burst, but he also scored twice on special teams, returning a punt 55 yards for a score in the first quarter a kickoff 87 yards in the second half.
Quarterback Troy Matte was also impressive in the victory. He completed four passes for 101 yards. He hit Jacques Wimberly twice for 44 yards and connected with Williams once for 46 yards. Christian Veronie also had one reception for 11 yards while rushing eight times for 52 yards.
Guillory was once again the lone bright spot for Iota in a 34-6 Homecoming loss to Jennings.
The freshman tailback racked up 101 rushing yards on just 14 carries.
Iota as a team picked up just 153 total yards of offense on the night.
