Prep Roundup: Rebels top ESA to finish league play unbeaten
CADE – The Midland Rebels already had their seventh straight District 7-B title sewn up with their victory over Lacassine last Tuesday.
All that was left was to take care of business at ESA on Friday to record yet another unbeaten season in league play.
And that’s exactly what they did.
The Rebels (23-5, 8-0) shot 50 percent from the floor and had three players score in double figures in a 71-39 thrashing of ESA on the Falcons’ home court.
The Rebels got seven points from Devin Gautreaux in the first quarter and jumped out to a 13-9 advantage.
Randy Primeaux took over in the second frame, scoring 11 of his 18 points to help push the lead to 30-16 at the break.
Things didn’t get much better for the hosts in the second half.
Traven Guidry and Taatum Rubin combined for 14 points and the lead grew to 22 (49-27).
Reserves Griffin Hains and Dylan Cormier each scored all four of their points in the fourth quarter as the Rebels outscored the Falcons 22-12.
Gautreaux led all scorers on the night with 19 points and Guidry had 10. Taatum Rubin followed with eight points, Dagan Patin had six and Dylan Boudreaux had two.
Guidry also led the team in rebounds with eight and he had seven steals. Boudreaux was the team’s assist leader with nine.
The Rebels will take nearly two weeks off before they close out the regular season on Feb. 20 at Northside Christian.
Knights upend Bulldogs
IOTA – South Beauregard’s Hayden Gunter proved to be an thorn in Iota’s side once again.
After scoring 30 points to lead to Golden Knights to a victory over Iota in the two team’s first meeting, he poured in another 25 Friday to lead his squad to a 55-48 victory over the Bulldogs on their home court.
Gunter scored five points in the first quarter as the visitors jumped out to an 8-3 advantage. He added eight more points in the second quarter but Iota kept pace with the Knights thanks to four 3-pointers that sent the Dogs into the half trailing just 23-19.
The Knights pushed the lead to 34-25 in the third quarter.
Iota didn’t go down without a fight, however.
The Dogs trimmed the lead to four (46-42) with just over a minute remaining but the Knights hit some key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Triston Fontenot’s 3-pointer at the buzzer cut the final deficit to seven.
Kade Hebert paced the Bulldogs with 11 points while Fontenot and Dylan Hebert each had nine. Hunter Andrus followed with seven points and Bray Latiolais had six. Chase Doucet and Garrett Reppond rounded out Iota’s offense with three points each.
Indians cruise past Gents
CROWLEY – Just when it appeared that things couldn’t get any worse for the Crowley Gents, they did.
After losing nine straight games, the Gents found themselves without starter Jacq’Co Price and sixth man Quanterral Robinson Friday for their matchup against league leader Washington-Marion.
The Indians took full advantage and cruised past the Gents, 80-41.
The Gents kept it close in the first quarter and trailed just 13-12.
That however, was as close as it got.
The Indians went on a 22-11 run in the second frame and then outscored the Gents’ 45-18 in the second half.
Christian Edwards was one of four Indians to score in double figures. He led the way with 15 points while Da’Vante Vitor and L’Marcus Walker each scored 12. Jeremiah Warren added 11 points.
Chris Osten and Alkwan Wesby each scored nine points for the Gents. Paul Goodley followed with eight points; Chris Lewis, six; Tyrin Daniels, five and Perry Myles , four.
Wolfpack slips past Pios
BALDWIN – The West St. Mary Wolfpack hit 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and held on for a 55-47 victory over the visiting Notre Dame Pios Friday evening in a District 6-3A contest.
The Pios led 15-14 after the first quarter before going into the half trailing by one (26-25).
The Pios (10-16, 3-3) managed just eight points in the third quarter as the Wolfpack stretched the lead to 39-33.
Ethan Smith poured in 11 points in the final frame but it wasn’t enough as the hosts outscored the Pios 16-14 over the final eigth minutes.
Hunter paced the Pios with 19 points and Smith had 13. Claiton Johnson added eight points in the loss, Tyler Simar scored five and Jacob LeLeux had two.
Duante Charles led the Wolfpack with 24 points.
Lady Pios run past West St. Mary
BALDWIN – The Notre Dame Lady Pios improved to 17-8 overall and more importantly, 7-1 in District 6-3A play Friday with a 47-18 waxing of the West St. Mary Lady Wolfpack.
The two teams played to a 4-4 deadlock in the first quarter before the Lady Pios went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter to take a 15-4 advantage.
Hanna Esthay poured in eight of her game-high 18 points in the third quarter to help push the lead to 30-11.
Seven Lady Pios scored in the fourth quarter in a 17-7 outburst.
Elise LeBeouf followed Esthay with nine points while Alyssa Williams had seven and Madelyn LeJeune had five. Hunter LeBlanc added three points, Annie Matthews and Melise Gossen each scored two and Catherine Gonzalez and Alexis LeBlanc each finished with one.
CHS Ladies fall short
CROWLEY – The Crowley Ladies went cold from the floor and never scored more than seven points in any quarter Friday in a 41-22 loss to Washington Marion.
The Ladies (9-15, 3-7) trailed 17-10 at the break before being outscored 24-12 in the second half.
Myah Rogers led the Ladies with nine points and Nykeila Winters had five. Taylor Dapremont and Chelsea Yokum followed with three points each and Teara Breaux scored two.
Singer rallies past NCS
CROWLEY – The Singer Lady Horents outscored Northside Christian 36-19 in the second half to slip away with a 57-34 victory over the Lady Warriors Friday evening.
The Lady Warriors (2-19, 1-6) actually led 20-18 at the half.
Cydni Crozier poured in all 11 of her points in the first half for the Lady Warriors.
Zoie Hanagriff followed Crozier with eight points and Zera Hanagriff had six. Madison Clement added five points and Leah Monte scored four.
Other games
In other local action, the Northside Christian Warriors played host to Singer in a District 6-C contest Friday.
Unfortunately, no information on that game was made available by the school on that game as of press time.
