Rayne Wolves enter state baseball playoffs
On Tuesday, the No. 29-ranked Wolves were slated to hit the road to Benton to take on the No. 4-ranked Tigers.
In a last-minute location change, Rayne High ended up in Shreveport on the LSU-S campus instead.
With that change under their belt, the Wolves tried to advance in the 4-A state playoffs, but Benton had other ideas as they shut down the Wolves, handing Rayne a 10-0 first round loss.
Rayne’s TJ Bearb was the lone Wolf to tag a hit in the contest against Benton’s Tanner Craft, a strong senior hurler who collected the first round win for the Tigers.
Rayne hurlers Hunter Keely and Hunter Doucet shared the mound for the Wolves in the loss. The Tigers notched 10 hits.
“We just had a lot of bad luck this year and couldn’t get back on track,” stated Rayne Coach Jason Bonin of his Wolves. “It was either injuries or the weather. You name it, we had it.”
“Mother Nature was harsh this year,” Bonin continued. “We had more practice time in the gym than on the field. I think baseball everywhere wasn’t really up to par this year. Players were behind in development because of that.”
Bonin concludes, “I still very proud of these kids for sticking with it and never giving up through this tough season. We have a bunch of seniors who have been with us for a while and they tried their best.”
