Jessie R. Spell
Jessie R. Spell passed away on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at Harbor Hospice Care facility in Lake Charles at the age of 100 while surrounded by family.
He was born in Ridge on July 23, 1915, to Robert and Mary Duhon Spell, and moved to Crowley as a young boy. He married Vera Mae Longenbaugh Spell and they raised one son, Lawrence Clayton “Butch” Longenbaugh.
Jessie was a rice miller all his life and retired from Supreme Rice Mill in 1995 at the age of 80. He spent the last six years of his life living with his son and daughter-in-law in Sulphur.
Jessie was a family man who loved his wife and son dearly. He was a kind and peaceful man who believed in hard work. He took pride in all his endeavors. He loved fishing and playing dominoes with family and friends. He was a great example to us and will be missed by many. He will always be remembered for his sparkling blue eyes.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Lawrence “Butch” Longenbaugh and wife Carol Guidry Longenbaugh of Sulphur; three grandchildren, Lisa Marie Longenbaugh of Monroe, Jake Anthony Longenbaugh and wife Shelly Granger Longenbaugh of Grand Lake and Jill Suzanne Longenbaugh Fills and husband Kevin Fills of Carlyss; three great-grandchildren, Fisher Clayton Fills, and twins Tate Michael and Maggie Mae Fills, all of Carlyss; and several nieces and nephews.
Jessie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, James Spell; and three sisters: Ethel Spell Hoffpauir, Dora Spell Morgan and Nora Spell Sarver, all of Crowley.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home. The family requests visitation to be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time.
Graveside services will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
