Norwood Marcy Lyons
Norwood Marcy Lyons, 80, of Crowley, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Aug. 24, 2015, following a long illness.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alberta Hensgens Lyons; one daughter, Virginia Lyons Rippetoe of Charlotte, North Carolina; three sons, Marcy Lyons Jr. and wife Felicia of Crowley, Christian Lyons of New Orleans and Nicholas Lyons and wife Tonya of Crowley; six grandchildren, Andre Lyons Bruce and husband Cody, Samantha and Olivia Lyons, Mary Elizabeth and Claire Rippetoe and John Christian Lyons; one great-grandchild, Emma Bruce, born the very day of his passing; siblings, Michael Lyons of Phoenix, Arizona, Alicia Nielson, Ellen Goddard, Phillip and Andrew Lyons of Seattle, Washington, Greg Lyons of Santa Cruz, California, Catherine Lyons of San Francisco, California, Thomas Lyons of Portland, Oregon, and stepmother Jenora Lyons of Seattle, Washington.
Born Sept. 18, 1934, to Dr. Norwood Earl Lyons and Olga Daigle Lyons, he was reared in Church Point, where, as a young man, he enjoyed being a Boy Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and later becoming a Scout Master. He attended Southwest Louisiana Institute, Tulane University and LSU Law School. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps having been stationed in Nagoya, Japan.
He began his career as an attorney in Crowley with the Edwards Law Firm, was a prosecutor for the Acadia Parish District Attorney’s Office and subsequently established his private law practice in Crowley. He was a member of the Pointe de l’Eglise Genealogical Society, conducted extensive genealogical research and authored writings on the Daigle family in Louisiana which are housed at the Acadia Parish Public Library.
He was a member of American Legion Post 15, was an avid hunter and a lifetime member of the National Bench Rest Shooters Association.
Some of his accomplishments include five time National Bench Rest Shooters Association National Champion, four time National Bench Rest Shooters Association world record holder, member of the Louisiana Cajuns – eight time national champions of the Trans-Continental Hunter Rifle League. He was a many-time Louisiana and Texas State Champion in Hunter Rifle and recipient of the National Hunter Rifle Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been inducted into the National Hunter Rifle Association Hall of Fame, served as director for the Gulf Coast Region of the National Bench Rest Shooters Association and also as President of the Hub City Rifle and Pistol Club of Lafayette. Due to his many accomplishments and endless hours of hard work and dedication, the Louisiana State Hunter Rifle championship trophy is named in his honor.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Norwood E. Lyons and Olga Daigle Lyons; his brother, Dwight Lyons; and sister, Audrey Lyons.
The Lyons family would like to thank his caregivers, Ashley Trahan, Lenora George, Diana and JD Breaux, Kay Cormier and Marie Monceaux, who made it possible for him to remain at home and receive the best of care during the final years of his illness. We are so grateful for the kindness, care and generosity of spirit shown during this difficult period of his life.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, from noon until 9 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 29, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. A rosary will be recited Friday at 7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mowata with interment following in St. Lawrence Parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michael Elementary School, Notre Dame High School of Acadia Parish or the Norwood Marcy Lyons Tribute Fund at the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
