RAYNE - The Rayne High Wolves hosted Opelousas High on Friday, Aug. 21, during a pre-season scrimmage at Wolf Stadium.
“I’m really pleased,” stated Rayne High Head Coach Curt Ware of Friday’s scrimmage. “We played well, executed well and made some big plays when we needed to.”
One thing Ware was really impressed with was his team’s effort throughout the scrimmage.
“Our effort was there the entire time,” Ware continued. “You like to see that as a coach -- putting it all out there on the field.”
“I realize we played a young team with a first-year coach,” Ware noted. “But, we still did well and never let up.”
Ware also stated Wolf quarterback Jaylon Reed hit his targets and is starting to run the offense.
In the backfield, newcomers Drekylon Gibson, Trent Winbush and Trent Winbush had some good runs.
“Trey (Wilridge) took one snap and he rested a slight injury,” stated Ware of the all-district returner for Friday’s scrimmage. “We had some younger guys take some runs and did very well. I was also impressed by Darian Harmon at fullback. He had a good day and so did our defense”
The young Wolves enter their 2015 season with the bulk of starters as underclassmen, but are already showing improvement.
“In all actuality, we are a year away from being as good as we can be,” commented Ware of his young squad. “When you lose as many starters as we have, you look to your underclassmen who have that drive and determination. I think we have that right now and they are putting forth the effort.”
The Wolves will have their hands full today (Thursday) as they face Crowley High during the Acadia Parish Jamboree slated at Gardiner Memorial Stadium in Crowley.
“Winning is not a factor this week,” Ware noted when looking towards the Jamboree against their longtime intra-parish foe. “We’re looking to improve on both sides of the line, run our offense, and see some improvement.”
The Wolves and Gents will hit the field during the second game of the Jamboree at approximately 8 p.m. The first game of the night will begin at 6 p.m. with Iota meeting Church Point.
During their first regular game of the season, Rayne High will host Church Point next week on Friday, Sept. 4, when they host Church Point. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Wolf Stadium.
