Laureate Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi hears of Alaskan travel, Skagway

Members of Laureate Mu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Nancy Tislow Sept. 1.
Following the opening ritual and the Pledge of Allegiance, the hostess presented the second half of her program on her 2014 Alaskan cruise.
The highlight of this leg of her trip was the stop in Skagway, the gateway to the gold fields for the thousands who flocked to Alaska and the Yukon in the the hope of striking it rich. Today, Skagway has less than 1,000 residents and still retains the flavor of the gold rush era.
While there, her group enjoyed the sculpture gardens and Skagway Museum and Archives. They also enjoyed a play, “The Legend of Soapy Smith.”
Gloria Stutes, service chairman, collected dish detergent to be delivered to Miss Helen’s Soup Kitchen and asked members to bring paper towels to the October meeting.
The next meeting will be held on Oct. 6 at the home of Connie Jaubert in Lafayette, and the chapter birthday will be celebrated. Members are asked to bring lunch, gifts for the secret sister reveal and three $1 bills for games.
Several suggestions for cultural outings were considered, and it was decided that the group would attend the performance of HoneyHoney at the Opera House on Oct. 7
Refreshments and time to socialize were enjoyed by those present, including Glenda Atkinson, Shirley Griffin, Connie Jaubert, Elsie Rowell, Stutes, Tislow and Phyllis Triggs.
