Sylvia Sellers Broussard
It is with great sorrow that the family of Sylvia Sellers Broussard, 88, announces her passing on Sept. 13, at 3 p.m., The Devine Mercy Hour. She was surrounded by her seven children and many loved ones at the time of her death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret of Scotland’s Catholic Church in Estherwood on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. Father Randal Morrow will be the celebrant. Con-Celebrants will be Msgr. Russell Harrington, Msgr. Paul Metrejean, Rev. Clint Trahan, Rev. Mark Milley assisted by Deacon Tom Sommers. Readers will be her godchildren, Beverly Hains and Annette Hebert. The pallbearers will be her 12 grandsons and her 11 granddaughters will drape the coffin.
Geesey Ferguson Funeral Home will be open noon to 10 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15. The St. Margaret’s Altar Society will lead a rosary at 3 p.m. on Tuesday which will be followed by a ceremony to honor her patriotism by The American Legion Auxillary, Post 15 at Geesey Ferguson. The Devine Mercy Chaplets will be sung, followed by the Rosary and Eulogies at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The funeral home will open at 8 am on Wednesday, Sept. 16, to 10:30 a.m.
She was born to Romuald and Lorina Sellers in Kaplan on Nov. 18, 1926, Sylvia graduated from Kaplan High School in 1942 then continued her education at SLI (ULL) with a bachelor degree in physical education. She married Ernie in 1945. They moved to Estherwood with their first three children in 1951. Sylvia was a physical education teacher and coach at Crowley High School from 1953-1956. She continued coaching and teaching at Midland High School from 1956-1961. She retired from her teaching career to raise her children. However, her love of sports and coaching continued on the sidelines as she watched and cheered for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their sports and other activities.
She is survived by her seven children and their spouses, Susan (Julius) Meaux, Becky Lamm, Ernie Paul Broussard II, Ginger (Keith) Comeaux, Cathy (Timmy) Savant, Scott (Julie Collura) Broussard and Kevin (Holly Jackson) Broussard. Her grandchildren and their spouses, Chris (Missy Naquin) Meaux, Angele (Jude) Mire, Brant (Khristy Hensgens) Lamm, Jed (Lauren Taylor) Meaux, Christa Broussard, Paul (Aimee Cunningham) Broussard, Jason (Paula Coignard) Lamm, Aylie (Taylor) Gray, Brittany (David) Meagher, Josh (Katy Thibodeaux) Savant, Ashley (Robert) Hurlburt, Jeffrey Broussard, Trent (Lannah Broussard) Broussard, Bart (Abby Pontiff) Savant, Lindsey (Chase) Munn, Tyler (Katie Camp) Comeaux, Trey Broussard, Morgan Comeaux, Emily (fiancée Mike Stutes) Broussard, Taylor (fiancée Alishea Jones) Broussard, Elizabeth Broussard, Ashton Broussard and Kelsey Broussard. She also leaves behind her 42 (plus three on the way) great-grandchildren to cherish the memories she left behind. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law and their spouses, Audrey B. Guidry, Dolores B. Hoffpauir, Beverly B. (John E.) Hains and Lauralie B. (Vance) Mackey. As well as many nieces and nephews who provided much time, care and love in her final days for which her children are most grateful.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Ernie P. Broussard who died Oct. 14, 2014, her parents, Romuald and Lorina Girouard Sellers; her sisters and their spouses, Helen (D.J.) Myers, Gertrude (J.B.) Broussard and Margaret (Sabra) David; her brothers-in-law, Laryman Guidry and Warren Hoffpauir; and her nephews, Keith Broussard, Timmy Guidry and Larry Guidry.
She was a devoted member of St Margaret’s Altar Society. Also a member for 70 years of The American Legion Auxillary, Post 15. She was a proud member of all activities which contributed to the promotion of children and athletics. She was an avid Rajun Cajun supporter, ULL Alumni and RCAF.
Her family would like to acknowledge and thank her caregivers Pam Cloud, Lola MacLean, Thelma Miller, Roberta Miller, Dannell Trumps, Suzette Yokum and Phyllis Pousson for their love, care and concern for our mother during her last year. She truly loved each of you. We also thank, Dr. Robert Aertker, Dr. Dale Leleux, Lamm Home Health and Lamm Family Hospice nurses and staff for their wonderful care and concern for our mother.
