Bob John Smith

Rayne, LA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Bob John Smith, 68, of Rayne will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 3:30 PM in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rayne. Father Samuel Fontana, Associate Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, will serve as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery No. 2, Rayne.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 1, 2016 from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM in Gossen Funeral Home, Rayne, with a rosary being recited at 7:00 PM. Visitation will resume on Tuesday from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM in the funeral home.

Mr. Smith passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 12:30 AM in a Lafayette hospital.

A lifelong resident of Acadia Parish, Mr. Smith served as a police officer with the Rayne Police Department for many years, and later at O'Reilly Auto Parts. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mr. Smith enjoyed listening and dancing to French music, and was a big fan of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. His greatest joy in life was being with and caring for his family.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Credeur Smith of Rayne; son, Blaine Smith and wife, Regina of Crowley; daughter, Alyssa Simoneaux and husband, Kevin of Iota; stepsons, Thad John Berken of Rayne, and Eric John Berken of Rayne; step-daughters, Julie Morton and husband, Wayne of Crowley, and Wendy LaPointe and husband, John of Rayne; brothers, Nelson Smith of Eunice, Hersey Smith of Mire, and Ronald Smith and wife, Sharon of Mire; sister, Janel Aymond and husband, Eldon of Eunice; brother-in-law, Lee Fontenot of Opelousas; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Preceding Mr. Smith in death were his parents, Octave and Edina Duplechain Smith; step-son, Alex Bertrand, Jr.; and sister, Bernella Fontenot.
