At the request of Mamou Police Chief Greg Dupuis, the Mamou Town Council approved the hiring of several new employees in the Mamou Police Department at its meeting Wednesday, July 9. Mayor Wilda Chamberlain was absent.
Dupuis asked the council to approved hiring four new employees. They were: Lauriel Ardoin, part-time dispatcher; Mitchell Kevin Fontenot, part-time patrolman; Mitch Doucet, festival security; and Joe Deshotel, compliance officer and part-time patrolman.
The council approved the hires unanimously.
Council members also discussed the subdivision development by Absolute Resources Inc.
Town Attorney Raymond Lejeune said Absolute Resources provided the town with a grant of servitude in regards to drainage on the subdivision property. However, Lejeune said the grant of servitude was not clear in several areas. Engineer Steve Tate also stated there was no explanation of the purpose of the document.
“I recommend the council not sign any servitude agreement,” Tate said.
Councilman Jody Soileau said the council has received no answers from Absolute Resources as far as plans for the subdivision development. He stated the development would simply need to follow subdivision ordinance rules and the council would need to be provided with plans and specifications of the development, which he said was never done.
Lejeune recommended the council reject the offer and it did so with a unanimous vote.
In other business, the council:
•Agreed to name the walking trail Adolf Dugas Memorial Park, after the town’s first mayor, at the request of Johnny Fuselier. However, the council did not take any action on an ordinance proposed by Fuselier that an individual must be deceased for 50 years before the town can name a facility or other area in their honor.
