Sarah Toncray Wyatt

Sarah Toncray Wyatt, formerly of Crowley, passed away peacefully on Aug. 27, 2014, in Dallas, Texas, after a lengthy illness. Sarah was born in Kentucky on July 30, 1936, to Andrew Henderson and Grace Dickerson Toncray. Sarah graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She received her master’s degree in psychiatric social work from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee.

Sarah, a loving, kind and generous wife, mother, grandmother and friend, is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, Huey Pierce “Hu” Wyatt; two sons, Keith Dickerson Wyatt of Dallas, Texas, and wife Sally Lyons; Brian Pierce Wyatt of Arlington, Virginia, and wife Melody Abella. Sarah also leaves behind her two cherished grandsons, Pierce Maxwell Wyatt and Dillon Marks Wyatt, both of Dallas.

In addition, Sarah is survived by a brother, Michael E. Toncray of Frankfort, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Elaine Wyatt Gilbert of Rayne; brothers-in-law, Coy Wyatt and wife Estelle of Abbeville, Wayne Wyatt and wife Gloria of Rayne; sister-in-law, Sue Toncray of Georgetown, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Grace Toncray; a brother, John E. Toncray; and a brother-in-law, Francis X. “Buddy” Gilbert.

For over 25 years, Sarah was a resident of Crowley. She is remembered for her active volunteerism and service to others. Among her various contributions to Crowley and Acadia Parish, she was instrumental in establishing the Acadia Parish Mental Health Association and in creating and coordinating a drug abuse education program for fifth-grade students throughout Acadia Parish schools.

Sarah was humbled and honored to receive the Citizen of the Year Award, presented by the Crowley Chamber of Commerce; the Outstanding Women of the Community Award presented by the Crowley Business and Professional Women’s Club; and the State Education Award presented by the Louisiana Mental Health Association. Sarah always said she accepted these honors on behalf of all her fellow volunteers who helped to make Crowley a better place in which to live.

Upon returning to her hometown of Georgetown, Kentucky in 1991, Sarah continued her active volunteerism in the Georgetown and Lexington communities.

A celebration of Sarah’s life took place on Sept. 6 in Georgetown, Kentucky.
