Lady Wolves begin season on positive note

The Lady Wolves Volleyball Team is off to a good start for the 2014 season recording a 5-1 slate following weekend action at the Westlake High Tournament.

Rayne was 3-1 in tournament play with wins over DeQuincy, Vinton and Iowa before dropping a three-game match to Sulphur.

In the DeQuincy match, Katie Benoit and Tarya Kanonu led at the net with four kills each with Kanonu recording three blocks. Layni Boudreaux ran the offense with five assists, along with defensive digs by Blair Bergeron, Shelli Alleman and Whitney Fontenot.

Charlesha Dugas and Kanonu led at the net for the Lady Wolves in their loss to Sulphur scoring eight kills each. Tristan Mouton chipped in three kills along with eight assists with Boudreaux’s six assists and two kills.

As the Lady Wolves answered with a three-game win over Vinton, Rayne’s net play was led by Kanonu, Benoit and Charlyne Peltier, each with five kills. Leading the defense were Jacie Fontenot and Blair Boudreaux, each with four digs. Mouton (8) and Boudreaux (6) were joined in assists by Landri Reviere (5) and Ashley Thibodeaux (5).

In their last match of the day, the Lady Wolves claimed a two-game win over Iowa. Dugas and Kanonu led at the net with four kills each, while Shelli Alleman and Boudreaux chipped in two of their own. Running the offense with assists were Peltier (4), Mouton (5) and Boudreaux (3).

In earlier action last week, the Lady Wolves claimed wins over Acadiana and Sam Houston.

In the Acadiana match, Kanonu and Dugas led all spikers with 15 kills each, in addition to numerous blocks by both net players. Back row ups were led by Whitney Fontenot with 16 digs, while the offensive assists were fed by Boudreaux (15) and Mouton (13).

Rayne High needed four games to defeat Sam Houston during Thursday afternoon action. Boudreaux and Mouton led with assists for Rayne’s offense, setting up Kanonu (8) and Dugas (6) for kills. Back row digs were led by Benoit and Peltier.

The Lady Wolves were slated to meet Catholic High at New Iberia Tuesday before returning home on Wednesday to host Ascension Episcopal, all in preparation for district play. 

District games begin today (Thursday) as the Lady Wolves travel to Crowley where they will meet the intra-parish rival Crowley High Ladies before participating in the Northside Tournament this weekend in Lafayette.
