Church Point upends Ville Platte, remains unbeaten

VILLE PLATTE – The Church Point Bears, using a balanced attack, rolled up 361 yards of offense  in a 34-14 victory over Ville Platte Friday night.
The victory sent the Bears to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in District 5-3A play, setting up a showdown for the league title Thursday at home against also unbeaten Livonia.
Friday’s contest was a defensive struggle in the first half with the Bears scoring the only touchdown in the first two frames on a 1-yard run by quarterback Troy Matte.
They finally began to pull away in the second half after Matte hooked up with Jacques Wimberly on a 57-yard touchdown strike with 11:06 remaining in the third quarter to push the lead to 14-0.
Deion Monroe added a 1-yard touchdown run five minutes later and the Bears took a commanding 20-0 cushion after a failed 2-point conversion.
Christian Veronie’s 15-yard run made it 27-0 before the end of the third quarter.
Ville Platte answered back with a pair of touchdowns early in the fourth quarter.
Vondarius Freeman scored first, from eight yards outs, and Rodricas Fontenot connected with Terese Thomas on a 12-yard scoring strike  with 8:27 remaining in the game to cut the lead to 27-14.
The Bears put the game away on an 11-yard touchdown run by Frederick Williams late in the fourth.
Williams finished with 113 yards on eight carries while Veronie had 83-yards on 16 carries. Monroe added nine carries for 74 yards.
Matte completed just one pass on the night, a 57-yard touchdown to Wimberly.
Thomas paced the Bulldogs with 149 yards on 28 carries while Serie Oxzabein had two receptions for 70 yards. Thomas had two catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.
