Following last week’s district championship win, the #5-ranked Lady Wolves claimed a 3-set win over #21 St. Martinville on Tursday during the regional round of the state volleyball playoffs.
The win once again sends the Lady Wolves to the LHSAA State Volleyball Tournament this week on Nov. 12-14 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
Quarterfinals are slate for Nov. 12, the semis on Nov. 13, and the championship finals on Nov. 14.
Rayne is scheduled to face #4 Ursuline Academy on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
A win on Thursday will see the Lady Wolves meet the quarterfinal winner of #1 Teurlings and #8 Parkview Baptist during Friday semifinal action.
“The girls played well,” stated Rayne Head Coach Stephanie Garrett on Monday’s win. “Middle hitter Charlesha Dugas played very well and set the tone of the game for our players.”
Dugas recorded 22 attacks with 12 kills along with five blocks.
Garrett continued, “I thought Katie Benoit had a good game being consistent at the net, along with Tarya Kanonu and Blair Bergeron.”
Benoit tallied 15 attacks with five kills, while Kanonu was 4-for-7 and Bergeron had 3-for-13.
“Our setters Layni Boudreaux and Charlyne Peltier had a good game,” she noted of the two running the Rayne offense. “They both fought through a few illegal sets, but they didn’t let it consume them as they have in the past.
Boudreaux recorded 14 sets, while Peltier had nine on the day.
“Our defensive players, libero player Karla Richard and back row defender Landri Reviere, did a good job with their ups.
Richard and Reviere combined for 15 digs for the Lady Wolves’ win.
“These eight seniors have worked really hard this past summer and their three years here, “ concluded Garrett. “I’m really proud of all their accomplishments this season and hope they can go far this week.”
A quarterfinal win on Thursday will be Rayne High’s first tournament win since the new playoff schedule was implemented a few years ago -- hopefully their goal of a win will be met.
