Lady Wolves headed to state softball tournament

RAYNE - The Rayne High Lady Wolves Softball Team claimed a 15-0 shutout over Lutcher Saturday afternoon at Gossen Memorial Park her. In doing so, they secured a spot at next week's 2014 State Softball Tournament slated in Sulphur.
This year's squad, under the new leadership of Natalie Travasus, returns to "The Show" as seniors -- their last trip taking place during their freshman campaign.
"I told these girls, if you just follow the game plan and give it your all, the win will come," commented Travasus following the Saturday regional win. "They have the talent, they just have to believe they can do it. I think they finally relaize that."
The first four Lady Wolves' batters scored in the very first inning to give Rayne a 4-0 lead. Whitey Fontenot and Katelyn LeDoux lead off with back to back triples, followed with singles by Kristin Gaspard and Cecily Schexnyder for the quick lead.
Behind the second straight three up, three down by the Rayne defense, Fontenot and LeDoux slapped their second triples of the game and Gaspard singled, extending their lead to 7-0 leading into the fourth.
Heading into the deciding and final inning, the Lady Wolves slapped in eight additional runs (including three triples by Latie Benoit, Kristin, Cecily Schexnyder) for a called 15-run rule and a second round win. During the inning, every Rayne player collected a hit as the lineup card was recorded.
Katelyn LeDoux and Katie Benoit both recorded a 3-for-4 day at the plate along with three RBI's and three runs each. LeDoux had three triples and Benoit with a two doubles.
They were joined by Kristin Gaspard (3-for-3, triple, 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBI's), Whitney Fontenot (2-for-3, 2 triples, 1 double, 3 runs), and Kelcie Bourgeois (2-for-3, 2 RBI's).
Also collecting hits for Rayne were Cecily Schexnyder, Blair Bergeron and Brittany Broussard, each with a triple and RBI's.
Noted with the win on the mound for the Lady Wolves was Kelcie Bourgeois who fanned three batters but limited Lutcher hitters to three hits and three walks.
"We just really hit the ball today like I knew we could all along," stated Travasus of the 16 hits banged out by her Lady Wolves for the win. "They have come a long way, but they worked hard to get here. I'm proud of our girls."
The No. 22-ranked Lady Wolves will meet No. 3 Vandebilt Catholic during the quarterfinal contest slated for 6 p.m. Friday at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
