Lady Wolves score district, tournament wins

The Lady Wolves Volleyball Team improved their 2014 season in a big way over the weekend with a tournament championship, in addition to their first district win Thursday afternoon. Rayne stands at 13-2 overall and 1-0 in district.

Rayne High won all four of their pool matches during the Northside High Tournament, qualifying for bracket play where they won two matches for the tournament championship.

In pool play, the Lady Wolves defeated Delcambre High, New Iberia Senior High, Cecilia High and Lafayette Christian Academy.

Leading net play for Rayne were spikers Tarya Kanonu, Shelli Alleman, Charlesha Dugas, Katie Benoit and Layni Boudreaux.

Boudreaux also led in assists, along with Tristan Mouton, Charlyne Peltier and Ashley Thibodeaux.

Back row digs were noted by Whitney Fontenot, Jacie Fontenot, Katie Benoit and Blair Bergeron.

In their semifinal win over Dequincy, the Lady Wolves were led at the net by Tarya Kanonu with 8 kills and 2 blocks. Charlesha Dugas had 3 kills and a block, while Ashley Thibodeaux recorded 2 kills and 2 aces.

Running the offense with assists were Thibodeaux and Peltier, Boudreaux.

Back row defense stats were led by Fontenot, Peltier, Dugas, Kanonu and Blakely Thomas.

The Lady Wolves met Iota in the finals and took the win in a three game match (26-24, 17-25, 15-12).

Kanonu led in kills with 9, along with 2 blocks and 7 digs while on the back row.

Dugas recorded 6 kills and 2 digs, while Bergeron had 4 kills and 9 digs.

Mouton posted 3 kills and a block at the net while setting up 5 assists and 3 digs.

Boudreaux led with 15 assists while running the offense, along with 2 kills and an ace at the serving line.

Benoit, Bergeron and Fontenot defended the back row with numerous digs.

In Rayne’s district win over Crowley High (25-11, 25-11, 25-15), the Lady Wolves dominated the net recording 20 kills.

Leading Rayne stats at the net were Tarya Kanonu and Charlesha Dugas with 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Kanonu also recorded a block, ace and 4 digs, while Dugas added 8 digs.

Ashley Thibodeaux had 10 assists, 4 digs, a kill and ace, with Jacie Fontenot having 6 digs.

The Lady Wolves were slated to meet Iota, North Vermilion in district games this week, follwoed by a non-district contest againts Carencro Wednesday. Rayne will return to district play next week when they meet Church Point and Northwest on Tuesdy and Thursday.
