RAYNE - The No. 6-seeded Lady Wolves began the state playoffs in the same fashion they completed an unblemished district slate, the dominating style with a 67-30 win over St. Martinville Thursday evening.
In front of a supportive home crowd, Rayne shut down St. Martinville to single digits in the first quarter, 16-6, a slight slip from their burst-out offense. But, there was a reason.
“I knew we would come out kinds cold tonight,” stated Rayne High Head Coach Chester Randal of Thursday’s win. “We had two weeks since we played and we gave the girls some well-deserved time off. It took us some time to get back on track.”
The Lady Wolves then dumped in 21 points in the second quarter behind a 16-point surge by team leader Charlesha Dugas, who finished the night with the game high 27 points, along with six steals and five rebounds.
“This group of upperclassmen have really stepped up this year,” Randal continued. “We lost starters from last year, but our upperclassmen have really been leaders and it showed here tonight.”
Dugas, along with senior partner Whitley Larry and underclassmen Amari Collins and Tajane Butler came out in the second half of play with a stiffling defense and press which produced 30 second second half points for the dominating 37-point win, limiting St. Martinville to three single digit quarters.
Collins finished the night with 17 points and three rebounds, while Larry dumped in 11 points while controlling the key with six blocks, 14 rebounds and six steals.
Butler contributed eight points, four rebounds and seven steals, while Keysuana Moore recorded two buckets and five steals.
The Lady Wolves will host #11 seeded Benton on Monday at 6 p.m. in the second round of the LHSAA playoffs.
