ARNAUDVILLE - Rayne High used a 27-point second half Friday to collect a 41-21 district win over Beau Chene. The win places the Wolves at 3-2 in district play.
A strong Rayne offense collected 491 total offensive yards for the win, the majority of which coming on the legs of Wolf runners.
Topping the list of running backs for Rayne on Friday was Deontrey Wilridge who had a break-out game with 24 carries for 253 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Adding to the Rayne offense was John Michael Besse with 20 carries for 145 yards for three touchdowns, along with 26 yards by Javon Cormier.
The Rayne defense held the Gators to 150 offensive yards, limiting Beau Chene runners for the win. However, the Gators were the first to light up the scoreboard.
On their very first possession on a third and five at their own 48 yard line, Beau Chene’s Savion Broussard broke through a seam for a 52 touchdown run. The extra point by Cole Cormier saw the Gators with a 7-0 lead at the nine minute mark of the first quarter.
But, Rayne answered on the next drive as John Michael Besse and Deotrey Wilridge combined for a 80-yard drive, ending with Besse punching it in from the one. The point after by Ben Alvarez knotted the ballgame at seven-all with plenty of ballgame remaining.
The second quarter saw the scoreboard knotted up once again at 14-all. Rayne was first to strike in the second stanza. The 92-yard drive included runs by Besse and Wilridge once again, in addition to completions by Jaylon Reed to the duo. The Wolves took a 14-7 lead on a TD completion from Reed to Besse and an extra point by Alvarez.
Beau Chene answered as the first half was coming to an end for a 14-all tie. Gator quarterback Andrew Morgan found Tevin Collins from 24 yards out, setting up a two-yard TD run by Savion Broussard to knot up the score for the halftime break.
On the kickoff, Rayne opened the second half of play with a “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” attitude on the legs of Wilridge and Besse once again. The duo combined carries during an 80-yard scoring drive, ending on a nine-yard TD by Besse. The extra point saw the Wolves take the lead once again, 21-14. But not for long.
On the kickoff, Beau Chene’s Christian Cormier hit a seam for a 71-yard touchdown return and just like that, the score was tied once again at 21.
The fourth and final quarter was all Rayne as they added three touchdowns for the eventual win. Wilridge ran in his two scores for the night, and Besse touched the end zone for the third time in the fourth quarter for the 41-21 win.
Completing the Rayne offensive stats for the win was 76 passing yards by Jaylon Reed on six completions to Wilridge, Besse, Troy Breaux and Donald Doucet.
Leading the Rayne defense were Donavon Cormier, Desmond Cole, Antonio Gabrielle, Richard Breaux and Hunter Keely.
Rayne’s Jaquan Cormier led on punt returns, while Besse held the top spot on kickoff returns.
The Wolves will return home on Thursday for their last scheduled game of the regular season, a district contest against Opelousas. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Wolf Stadium.
