Rayne High Homecoming 2014 was completed Friday evening on a high note as the Wolves claimed a 32-9 win over Abbeville High.
Amid sloppy field conditions due to heavy rains over the past week, both squads were limited to their offensive play as noted by Rayne Head Coach Curt Ware.
“We struggled on offense and just didn’t play up to our potential tonight,” notes Ware as the Wolves were slapped with 10 penalties for 100 yards. “Sure, a win is a win and we’ll take it any night. But, with the field conditions and the detractions of Homecoming week, we just didn’t seem to have our heads in the game.”
The Rayne offense turned in 304 offensive yards for the win, a slight decrease from their two opening games. Of those yards, 192 came on the ground.
Leading Rayne rushers on the ground was Deontrey Wilridge with 72 yards on 16 carries. John Michael Besse was 11-for-55, Jaylon Reed 9-for-39 and Byron Mouton 3-for-22.
“We were limited on our running game tonight,” commented Ware on Abbeville’s two sacks and a number of rushes in the backfield. “We definitely have some work to do in those areas.”
For Rayne’s passing game, quarterback Jaylon Reed tossed five completions for 112 yards. Leading Rayne receivers was Trevon Fontenot who nabbed three receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Fontenot was joined by John Michael Besse for a 17-yard reception, along with Troy Breaux with one catch for a touchdown.
Rayne’s defense held Abbeville to 183 total offensive yards on the night, 132 on the ground and only 51 in the air.
Leading Rayne defenders were Donavon Cormier with 5 solo tackles, 6 assists and an interception, along with Trevon Fontenot who also grabbed an interception. Three Abbeville fumbles were recovered by Jaquan Cormier, Haven Doucet and Richard Breaux.
Also leading in tackles were Brice Meche, TJ Bearb, Nicky Faucheux, Haven Doucet, Todd Broussard, Jaquan Cormier, Richard Breaux, Michael Gossen and Desmond Cole.
“We begin district next week,” noted Ware of the improvement needed for his Wolves, “And we will really have to work on a few things that we had difficulty executing tonight.”
The Wolves will travel to Lake Charles on Friday where they will meet Washington-Marion in their district opener. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
