RAYNE - The Wolves used their running game Friday to record their second win in as many outings, handing North Vermilion a 26-10 loss.
“We were looking at a 20-0 lead early on,” stated Rayne head coach Curt Ware of Friday’s win, “But, we kinda slowed things down and gave them (North Vermilion) a few chances to get back in the game.”
The Wolves were early to score as Jaylon Reed found Byron Mouton for a 65-yard touchdown pass on Rayne’s very first drive. The extra point by Donald Doucet put Rayne with a 7-0 lead at the 12-minute mark.
Rayne finished the first quarter with a 26-yard TD run by Deontrey Wilridge and a 13-0 score when a conversion failed.
John Michael Besse ran in Rayne’s third score of the night mid-way through the second quarter. Doucet’s extra point placed Rayne in the driver’s seat with a 20-0 lead before the half.
North Vermilion used the remaining minutes of the first half to score their first points of the game, a 40-yard Ty Desormeaux pass to Taylor Abshire. The extra point closed the gap for a 20-7 Rayne lead for the halftime break.
Wolf defenders held tough in the third quarter, forcing North Vermilion to settle for a 28-yard field goal but inched closer with a 20-10 score as the game entered the final quarter of play.
Around the four-minute mark, Rayne’s defense held tough once again inside the red zone and took over on downs when Besse hit the sideline for a 82-run before stopped on the six-yard line. Reed found Wilridge near the end zone for another touchdown to tie up a 26-10 Rayne win.
“We collected yards again tonight,” noted Ware of Rayne’s 417 total offensive tally for the win. “As a coach, you're always happy with that. We just need to keep up our intensity and not let our guard down. We got away with that tonight, but as the season continues and you meet some teams, you can’t hand them opportunities like we did tonight.”
Reed was 6-for-12 on the night in the air for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
Receivers were Byron Mouton )1-65), Trevon Fontenot (3-32) and Deontrey Wilridge (1-6).
Rayne ran a good game with 316 yards on the ground. Besse led all rushers with 146 yards on 12 carries, followed by Javon Cormier (11-90), Deontrey Wilridge (10-75) and Byron Mouton (4-21).
Defensively, Rayne limited North Vermilion to 288 total yards on the night. Rayne held the Patriots’ running game to only 71 yards forcing them to the air with 217 yards.
Rayne defenders were led by Nicky Faucheux with 9 tackles and 5 solos, joined by TJ Bearb (6 and 4), Donavon Cormier (6 and 3), Jaquan Cormier (3 and 2), Haven Doucette (2 and 1) and Desmond Cole (2 and 2).
The Wolves will host Abbeville High Friday during their annual homecoming celebration. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Wolf Stadium.
